Shaving my head for brain cancer

Did you know, brain cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease. Despite this, it receives less than 5% of federal government cancer research funding.

Hi, my name is Anna I’m a 17-year-old student from Melbourne. This May I will be shaving my head in hopes of raising funds and awareness of brain cancer for research and support. All funds raised will go to Robert Connor Dawes Foundation (RCD) a Melbourne based charity that supports young people aged 25 and under who are suffering from brain cancer.

My sister Kat was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour when she was 16. She underwent 12 months of chemotherapy and while it is now stable she still suffers from chronic neurological symptoms 7 years on. This is all too common for brain tumour survivors, while they may not be in immediate threat of passing away they live and suffer for years with a brain and body that no longer functions properly.

Brain cancer receives less than 5% of federal government cancer research funding. There are over 120 types of brain tumors which means researching and finding treatments for all of these is extremely challenging and costly, consequently resulting in low survival rates. Only 2 in 10 people diagnosed with brain cancer will survive for at least 5 years. In order for the survival rate to increase more funding needs to be allocated to brain cancer research. I never want anyone to go through what my sister and my family went through so please if you could donate to my go fund me I would really appreciate it.

More about RCD:
Inspired by a big heart and brain, the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation was created in June 2013 in the memory of Robert ‘Connor’ Dawes.
We are battling pediatric brain tumours and supporting brain matters in the areas of research, care, and development – to fund the science to end brain cancer and support patients in the meantime.

Research:
Contributing funds to Australia brain tumor research to enable researchers to further understand and more completely treat brain tumors, including earlier detection, surgery and post-surgery treatments (radiation & chemotherapy).

Care:
Supporting families by organizing and funding emotionally invaluable rehabilitation therapies and home assistance. During treatment, Connor had weekly music and yoga therapy on top of his standard rehabilitation. These programs give comfort to both the patient and the family are often not covered by insurance.

Development:
Inspiring the next generation of brain cancer practitioners & researchers. Through awareness programs, Ph.D. Scholarships and youth engagement activities, we’re putting brain matters on the map.
