Jully's Puppy

Hello friends,

My best friend Jully was diagnosed with Lupus almost 15 years ago and not a day has passed without her ability to feel gratitude and acceptance for this disease that has drastically affected her day to day life. Additionally, 10 years ago she was diagnosed with a rare blood clotting disorder that would add more challenges to her already difficult life.

Since the age of 18, she has only spent one year of her life being "hospital free". Meaning the two diseases, lupus and catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome, would reek havoc on her body; as she was entered into the hospital countless times for complications from her illnesses, year after year.

In 2012 Jully was hospitalized for complications stemming from a subclavian aneurism. After the initial surgery to fix the aneurism, her heart got infected by a condition called a pericardial tamponade. The skin around her heart filled with fluid and she could no longer breathe. She had to be taken into the operating room immediately for an emergency surgery. Her heart stopped while on the operating table but the doctors successfully revived her.

As soon as Jully recovered from this major surgery, she began working and getting her life back together. It was during this time that Jully started a lupus support group for central Massachusetts. Jully has always had a passion for helping others, and she thought a support group would be a great idea, after all that she had experienced at such a young age. Although the group is no longer active, she is still available for phone support.

2015 in particular was the scariest one she and her loved ones have come to face. 90 days. 3 Months. A season. A Summer. That is how long Jully was in the hospital recovering from a surgery that almost took her life.
On the night of April 30th, Jully was put under for a 10 hour emergency surgery to repair a hole in her aorta. The doctor's explained to Jully's parents that her heart was too sick and she had a 1% chance of making it through. Jully didn't wake up from life support until 3 weeks after the initial procedure. Every day in the hospital was a complete roller coaster. Challenges arose on a daily basis, and everyday for those first few weeks she underwent countless procedures and surgeries to stay alive. Jully beat the odds! I do not know anyone else in my life that could have come back from a 1% chance of survival. She is truly a miracle!

Jully is currently bound to braces on both legs and a cane, as some of her mobility was lost resulting from multiple traumas to her body. But that has not stopped her from moving around in the world, still smiling ever so bright.

Jully has been participating in the Lupus Foundation of New England's annual fundraiser walk for the past 5 years. She has been among the top donors every year, raising almost a total of $20,000. Her passion to help others has never wavered. Jully has never failed to raise money for the Lupus Foundation even when she has been recently released from the hospital.

In the past, Jully also volunteered for New England All Breed Rescue and helped a little yorkie mix, named gizmo find a home. Even when the first home that was found for Gizmo turned out not to be his forever home, Jully welcomed him back and kept him until his forever home was found. Jully has a special place in her heart reserved for dogs.

Jully's compassion to help others has been unwavering. Even when she could not help herself. And now I ask you to help Jully.

Due to her new medical condition that makes her walk with braces and a cane, Jully has also lost her drivers license. With this loss came not only the inability to drive, but a huge loss of independence. This has no doubt led to a form of depression as she is trying to adapt to her new life. I think it would be a great idea for Jully to get a puppy, and she agrees! Having a pet to take care of would give her more purpose, it would force her to get out more in order to take the dog on a daily walk. It would help her feel as though she has gained independence by having a loving animal to care for. Dogs have been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, two things that Jully struggles to keep regulated. Jully has a lot of time and love to give a puppy!

The puppy that Jully is interested in is a young Havanese female who is described as being very calm and having therapy dog potential. Either way, having a dog will certainly be therapeutic for Jully!
