Seniors Lost their Home

When I married Gene in October of 2008, it was a dream come true.  We had both been widowed and finding each other online on Catholic Mingle was such a blessing.  I moved from Springfield, IL to Jim Thorpe, PA to spend the rest of my life in the home Gene and his late wife, Dolores had bought and lived in for 38 years before her death from breast cancer.  I had never owned a home before and quickly came to love making it our "love nest".  About five years ago we ran into some major financial problems.  We heard about reverse mortgages and applied and was approved for one.  A couple of years into the mortgage we started receiving notices that we were in default for not paying our real estate taxes.  I couldn't understand it because we HAD paid them.  I called and told them there must be some mistake but they insisted.  Finally, I asked them to send me what they had paid, and I went down to our county tax office and got copies of what we had paid in full!  I mailed it off to the company and received no response.  Meanwhile, the Reverse Mortgage Company sold our "loan" to another company.  I have since discovered that this company, and all others like it, are in fact, banks.  So the procedure starts all over again.  They said....I said.  And again I sent in my PAID IN FULL statement from the county.  Last November we were notified this company had received a Foreclosure from a judge.  We were not notified nor were we allowed to present any evidence before a judge.  The house was sold at a Sheriff's auction in February.  We were never notified of the sale.  We have now been contacted by a realtor who has been hired by the company who purchased our home.  And we've been given a 15 day notice to vacate.  Two weeks ago we received our tax bill in the mail; it was $388 (half of the yr).  I filed it to pay it on the next payday.  The next day we received another tax bill; it was $392.  I thought it must be a corrected statement or something.  I laid them out on the table to look at them but could not figure it out.  Gene looks at them and points to the heading where it said, Carbon County Real Estate Taxes, and the other heading said, Jim Thorpe Borough Taxes.  I had only been paying the county taxes.  Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa!  In my defense (?) Gene told me they use to come together in one envelope.  We also have school taxes and occupation taxes.  Gene is taxed because he has a job.  I'm taxed because I live in Jim Thorpe.  We are taxed to death!
We have to rehome five of our cats (hoping to be able to keep the two older ones).  We have no place to move; no way of physically moving without help; and we have no money.  We are 76 and 71 years old.  We have Social Security, Gene has a small pension from 32 years on a job ($428 mon) and he works a part time job (2 days a week).  We both have physical problems.  I suffer from Pulmonary Hypertension, IBS, back problems, sciatica, and asthma.  Gene has really bad knees and balance problems.  He has osteoporosis and has had five major breaks since we have been married.  He fractured his right ankle, right wrist, a couple of ribs, a C-2 fracture of his neck, and last summer he spent three months in a recliner/lift chair due to a fractured knee cap.  We need help.  We are trying to look at this as a blessing.  We needed to downsize and get into a living situation that is safer and easier on both of us, i.e., no stairs, no big house to care for, and no yard to worry about.  We really don't want to give up our babies (three of them were born here and one of them is deaf).  But we have no choice.  We are in desperate need of help to rent and to move.  Please find it in your heart to help; even $5 will help.  God bless you!
