Sene-Gambian Scholars

$2,620 of $5,000 goal

The Sene-Gambian Scholars Program at Amherst Regional High School (ARHS) in Amherst, Massachusetts, is seeking donations to bring students and teachers from Gunjur, The Gambia, to visit the United States in the spring of 2019.

Last February 13 ARHS students and 3 faculty members were hosted by families in Gunjur, attended classes in the local high school, and visited cultural sites in The Gambia. The ARHS students would like to host the Gambian students next spring, but the cost of visas and international airfare is beyond the means of most families in The Gambia. The Sene-Gambian Scholars are thus trying to raise enough funds for at least 3 students and 1 faculty member to travel to the U.S. The estimated cost is $1,500 per person, and ARHS students have already raised over $1,000.

The Sene-Gambian Scholars Program has been active at ARHS for over 10 years. It’s goals are to infuse African studies into all parts of the curriculum and to maintain a cycle of exchange programs with partner schools in Sénégal and the Gambia. Students from Sénégal have made two trips to the U.S., but students from The Gambia have not yet been able to come. With your help, that could change in 2019.

Our partner in The Gambia is the Trust Agency for Rural Development (TARUD), a local NGO based in Gunjur, The Gambia. Founded in 1998, TARUD’s mission is to work with marginalized men, women, and children to create an enabling environment that will allow them to participate in designing and fulfilling their development aspirations and to assist in the development of civil society by providing services that have a sustainable, capacity-building approach and contribute to the global awareness of development issues. TARUD served as a home base for the exchange program in The Gambia, arranging for host families and coordinating local activities.
