Help us send our most committed debaters to a top college debate camp this summer!

Charlestown High School serves almost exclusively low-income students of color in Boston Public Schools. We hold high expectations for our students, and the debate team is the premier academic outlet for the brightest and hardest working members of our community. Attending camp will give them access to the same academic opportunities and experiences that their more privileged suburban peers receive.

Debate has a powerful effect on students’ lives. Last year, all three of our graduating senior debaters were able to attend a college summer camp through community support. All three also earned full-ride scholarships to top colleges, including Brandeis University, Hamilton College, and Centre College. This year, two of our graduating seniors have already received full-rides to Boston University. Debate helps our students see themselves as college-bound, prepares them for the rigor of college classes, and serves as a key resume bullet point on their applications.

Our high school debate team, made up of over 70 debaters, is one of the largest debate teams in the city of Boston and has a track record of success, sending students to the Urban Debate National Tournament for the last two years. Given the financial realities of our school district and the students who attend our school, however, we struggle to provide our top debaters the training and rigor of college debate camps.

We are trying to send three students to the University of Texas Skills Intensive Camp. These debaters have shown a commitment to the team, attending every tournament available to them this year and spending countless hours in practice. They stand to be some of the most competitive teams in the city next year, and with your support, they will be able to win against their suburban peers at regional tournaments as well. This summer camp will improve our debaters' skills, help them better understand the policy topic for the year, and prepare them to lead the larger team.

In high schools across the country, debate trains the next generation of leaders. Help us make sure students of all backgrounds and experiences have a seat at the table, not just those who can afford it.
