Hi! My name is Zara Coulston-Williams and I am a Year 12 student and School Captain of Tallangatta Secondary College. I am currently studying 4 STEM subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Further Maths and Maths Methods) and literature - as you might be able to tell; I love science! It is my passion and dream to work in the science industry one day as a researcher and educator to share my love of science with the world. Currently, I'm looking at studying a double degree in a Bachelor of Science/Statistics next year.
The Opportunity
Due to my passion for science and learning, I have been selected to represent Australia through the National Youth Science Forum at the University of Michigan's Maths and Science Scholars (UMMSS) Program in June/July later this year! This is an amazing opportunity for me to expand my horizons and experience science hands-on with people from around the world - I'll be able to network with like-minded people and gain clarity about the international scientific community and how I could make my mark on the world in the future.
At Michigan, I will attend classes for the two weeks and get to work in first-class labs as well as looking at current scientific research - the UMMSS program focuses on the application of science in everyday life. I will experience university life and get a taste of American culture; this international program will also give me an idea of what it is like to study overseas!
The Costs
I can't get to Michigan without my community's help. The cost of the program is $5,750 which covers the entirety of the costs for the 2 week program such as accommodation, food, activities during the program as well as travel expenses - plane tickets, travel insurance and visas.
