Send MHN to Boston University

Donation protected
This fund benefits the hardworking staff of Mount Holyoke News, a newspaper produced by and for the students of Mount Holyoke College. By raising $600, we will be able to send four student journalists — of various positions and class years — to Boston University’s Power of Narrative Conference from March 23-25. With $900, we'd be able to cover an yet another student's registration fee and reimburse our volunteer drivers for gas and parking, making the event more accessible to a wider range of students. Thank you for investing your time and money into our community!

The Conference

Every March, Boston University’s College of Communications hosts The Power of Narrative Conference, a three-day event jam-packed with workshops, lectures and presentations by leading journalists. According to their website, the conference is aimed at “helping narrative journalists to strengthen their craft skills, puzzle out the complex ethics of intimate journalism, and impart the down-to-earth humanity that is the genre's strength.”

Several of this year’s guests have been celebrated for their reporting on sexual assault and harassment — Emily Steel (NYT), Sacha Pfeiffer (The Boston Globe), Ellen Gabler (NYT), Anita Badejo (Pop-Up Magazine) — and others boast impressive careers with WBUR, ESPN, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Radiotopia, Buzzfeed, CNN and the Tampa Bay Times.

Everything we learn at this conference will be directly applied to our journalism practice at Mount Holyoke and beyond.

The Paper

Mount Holyoke News is the college’s only independent student newspaper, meaning we operate without a faculty advisor. That is why it’s so important — especially for our editing staff — to take advantage of opportunities which empower them to be capable, confident leaders.

This year also marks the newspaper’s hundredth anniversary, and what a year it’s been! Last fall we debuted several new columns (including MHN 100, a bi-weekly series reflecting on the newspaper’s history) and in January we expanded the paper from 12 to 16 pages. With the expansion, we’ve been able to double our content in four key sections — Features, Arts & Entertainment, Books and Health & Science — and launch a community page which offers free student advertising and boosts reader engagement with our print publication. Help us keep our momentum by investing in our up-and-coming editors who will be entering greater leadership roles next fall.

And You!

As journalists, everything we do is on a deadline, and this fundraiser is no different. The Power of Narrative conference sells out every year, so we need to raise this money quickly and get our staff registered by March 22. If you donate $25, Mount Holyoke News will send you a personal thank you note and an official MHN sticker, so you can show off your support for quality student journalism. All the funding will go toward conference registration fees, as lodging will be provided by MHN families in the Boston area. Money raised beyond our goal will be used to reimburse drivers for gas, cover additional registration fees or set aside for future conferences. Thank you for your support!
