My name is Mason and I'm an 18 year old in Glendive, Montana and I've been passionate about serving other people since I can remember.
My freshman year I heard about an organization called AIDSpiritUSA, which runs an orphanage in the Kayunga District of Uganda, Africa. Often times, the orphans are taken in off the streets being badly beaten, living in the trash heaps, or being sexually exploited and trafficked. These children are given a new life with the opportunity to get an education and become something extraordinary. Throughout my 4 years of high school, I have been very involved in Key Club, serving now as the Montana District Governor and an International Councilman. Montana KC has been partnered with AIDSpirit for 3 years, and I was the 3rd consecutive governor to choose this organization as my project for the 1,000+ members to focus on for one year.
Hearing the stories of these children has been a slap to the face. It's so easy to just ignore the issue until you realize how personal and how real these kids are. I want to go to Africa for 3 reasons.
1. See Sharon Nabakooza. I have pledged to pay for Sharon to go to school for at least 7 years. She wants to be a teacher when she grows up, and has had the hardest life I could imagine. Both of her parents died of AIDS and she now lives with her grandmother and farms every day. She is only 8 years old.
2. Broaden my horizons. I am tired of being so oblivious to the pain happening every single day. I want to see people that are broken and pour myself into them. I want to gain a new perspective on the world so that I am changed forever.
3. Fulfill my dream. When I heard the first presentation about this movement 4 years ago, I ran up to the speaker when they were done with fire in my eyes asking "How can I go there?" I've spent countless hours dreaming about seeing these people and learning from their culture and being able to be a huge part of this insane opportunity.
