Send Jett To Space

Donation protected
Jett is 10 years old and in Year 5 at Mosman Public School. He's a science and technology enthusiast who loves swimming, debating and playing saxophone in the school band. Jett is also severely vision impaired after he suffered from a brain tumour in 2015 and lost his vision suddenly and permanently (he was 8 at the time).

As you can imagine it’s been a tough couple of years for Jett. He’s had to adjust to life without something most of us take for granted and rely on for even the most mundane day to day activities. Eating, dressing, playing – he’s had to learn to do all these things differently since his illness.

Jett has had to learn to read all over again in Braille, and navigate around school, home and in the community with his cane. He can't read music so he spends hours learning all his saxophone music off by heart so he can play in the school band.

In spite of his disability and the adjustments he’s had to make, Jett refuses to be limited. In the last two years he’s learned to code using screen reader software on his computer and has set himself a goal to write his first game before he turns 12. He’s participated in his school athletics carnival and run cross country and his determination and positivity have inspired us all.

Last year he took on the 5k Mini-Mos. This year Jett decided to try swimming competitively for the first time and made it all the way to State where he won bronze for his age group in the 50m Multiclass Breaststroke. The sky is the limit for Jett, and maybe even further than that!

Now we want to send Jett into space…well, not literally but the next best thing.

Earlier this year Jett applied for and was granted a scholarship to go to SCIVIS – Vision Impaired Space Camp in the US. This is an incredible opportunity for him to spend a week learning and developing not only his science, maths and robotics skills but also a number of life skills, independence, resilience and more. It will also give Jett the opportunity to meet other children from all over the world with a vision impairment.

Jett is the first ever primary school age student in NSW to receive this scholarship and if he can go he can hopefully pave the way for other vision impaired students to take advantage of opportunities like this in future years.

While Jett's flight and costs are covered in the scholarship, he needs a parent to accompany him on the flight (and home again!). His vision support teacher also has the opportunity to go with him to provide braille support while he is at Space Camp but not all her costs are covered.

We are hoping to raise $7500 to cover the flight and accommodation costs for a parent to accompany Jett as well as covering additional costs for his teacher. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

ADDED 20/7 - We've made our original goal which is amazing and still getting donations! Any thing we have left over after space camp will be put towards braille computer equipment for Jett. This will be a massive help over the long term so he can do his homework more independently and also work on his coding x
