Hello! My name is Andrew Vinther, and I am a 15 year old double bassist from Mountlake Terrace, Washington. I am incredibly honored to be selected for the Interlochen summer program, known as the “Juilliard of the Midwest,” and I cannot wait to attend. This is a 6 week program in Interlochen, Michigan, and it is regarded as one of the most prestigious summer academies available to young musicians.
Music has been a part of my life since I was very young. My parents tell stories about me sitting in front of the piano in my high chair and matching pitch at 18 months old. I started playing trumpet in 2nd grade and in the 5th grade, I began playing and fell in love with the double bass. The bass gives me opportunities that I would never get without it, just like this one with the Interlochen Summer academy. I am currently in the Seattle Youth Symphony program, sitting as principal bass in the Junior Symphony. Attending this summer institute would allow me to greatly broaden my classical horizons, by playing world famous orchestral repertoire at an incredibly high level. This program would also shoot me to a whole new level of playing and performing, with many performance opportunities and world class instruction. My life dream is to be a professional bassist and the Interlochen is a great place to really dig into my bass skills and get even more on to that path.
While I did qualify and receive some financial aid, I was still asked to contribute $6000 of the $9,450 tuition/room and board fees. I’m also responsible for travel from Seattle to Interlochen and back for me and my bass. Any contributions to this would be greatly appreciated.
