I'm delighted to have served my Title 1 school for the past 13 years! My students come from dozens of different countries, refugee camps, and the local neighborhood and speak more than 40 different languages and dialects.
For the past five years, I have been sharing my profound love of the magical, mysterious, mystical Monarch Butterfly and its amazing journey! During a month-long celebration, we tend our school garden's milkweed patch, raise the fat, stripey caterpillars in our library, and celebrate their 'eclosing' (hatching) with Release Parties! Through the study of these magical creatures, my students learn about Mexico and the Day of the Dead festivals that surround the return of the Monarchs to their winter vacation-land! We have enjoyed exchanging paper butterflies with mountain schools in Michoacan, Mexico, through the Symbolic Monarch Migration program, and older students have performed tagging and parasite sampling through University of Georgia Citizen Science Programs! My students have benefited profoundly from our years-long studies.
After many years of waiting, saving, and anticipating, I am finally going to pursue my dream of visiting the Monarchs' over-wintering sites high in the mountains outside Mexico City, but I could use some help. My kindergarten kids are excited for me to visit the "Magic Mountain" where the butterflies live! I will be able to create a wondrous PhotoStory to share with them, and will bring back Mexican folk arts to share and display.
I am traveling with Holbrook Travel Company in February, 2019. The cost of the trip alone is $1,795. Roundtrip airfare (coach) will be between $400 and $500. I would be deeply humbled and grateful for any financial help.
The inspiration I gain from this experience will be shared with hundreds of brilliant little ecologists for years to come. Thank you for considering this project!
