I've been working with Voces y Manos since April 2013 and have spent time in Rabinal, Guatemala working with the youth we serve. They are all exceptionally smart, driven, and possess a strong desire to give back to their community.
By providing financial support to this group of young leaders we help them stay connected to their community and become future leaders with a vested interest in seeing their community thrive.
$1000 provides funds to send one of our students to university for one year. We always have more students who qualify than funds available so raising an additional $2000 goes a long way.
Some of the amazing work our students have completed include providing fruit trees to families, reducing erosion in local agriculture installations, and organizing weekly community cleanups to manage and reduce waste. All of these projects have improved the lives of community members and were student-led projects that involved community outreach and input.
The thing I love about Voces y Manos approach is we provide the means and tools to our students. They do the rest. We don't tell them what to do. We teach them how to assess community needs, prioritize needs, and recceive input from key community stakeholders to win support for a successful project.
