Our Future City Workshops Fruitvale

Donation protected
"Seeding Butterflies", is part of a series of theme-based workshops focused on helping young girls find their way and, "Become the Architects of Your Own Future".

The workshops include printing coloring books, buying markers and paper, securing a venue and delivering the workshops to the girls over a 2-3 hour workshop.

We're looking at $50 per child and we want to deliver to 100 girls through the month of January 2017 which adds up to $5000.  If we can secure a venue free of charge that will be fantastic!

This workshop is a variation of one we collaborate with the City of Oakland to deliver called, "Our Future City", which includes a coloring book I illustrated telling stories about the past, present, and future resilience of Oaklanders.

The coloring book is our pro-bono contribution for the Resilient Oakland Playbook and Rockefeller Foundation's 100 Resilient Cities initiative and our answer to challenge to, “Build a More Trustworthy and Responsive Government” by, “Engaging Youth in Shaping the Future of Oakland.”

We created the coloring book with the help of two third grade girls, and their families, from the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland and they really want these workshops in school or in some easy-to-arrange setup.

They learned so much and were totally enthralled with the process and stories they asked me if I could make it so they can learn like this in school from now on. This sounds great to me, and we cannot wait to do this later.

Most kids are extremely up to date with current events and ask me a lot of questions about why things are happening the way they are today, and what they can do to be OK, and if someone is going tear their families apart.

Add news of lead poisoning in the Fruitvale neighborhood, potentially many times worse than Flint, MI, and the Ghost Ship fire, where these vibrant, witty, whip-smart kids live adds to our concern for their situations.

They are why I'm fundraising. All the kids in Oakland are the reason, really.

Over the holidays I spent time with the girls and their families and we really want to get these workshops to as many girls and boys as possible this month.

The GPS sessions about imagining the future and how to attain their dreams will help them gain their bearings and start figuring out what they can do, as kids, to be heard and understood in the wake of all these recent developments.

We have a non-profit called, "Think Vision Architecture", whose mission is social equity achieved through digital literacy programs, STEAM education, community engagement, workforce development, and STEAM job placement.

The website includes many programs like this one, and three more in the "Butterfly Effect", series we’re fundraising for, so please check them out here and help spread the word toward funding our projects asap!

We appreciate donations of all kinds and do hope corporate sponsors and philanthropic organizations will consider investing larger funds to help us do more, faster.

This is an ongoing need for funding and we appreciate you helping us get the word out so we receive enough support quickly enough to offer these workshops to Oakland youth starting January 10, 2017 and beyond.

Thank you so much for helping us support the girls and boys of the Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland and, hopefully if we receive enough funding, throughout the city of Oakland and into more cities around the world.
