Search for Shay on Everest
on behalf of Pamela Lawless
It is with an extremely heavy heart that the Lawless family have had to set up this GoFundMe page to ask for donations.

The insurance company that had provided a policy for Séamus (Shay) are currently not providing assistance with the search and rescue.  Shay achieved his lifelong dream on the morning of Thursday 16th May when he reached the peak of Mount Everest.   Tragically, on his descent, Shay fell and has been missing since.

With the weekend upon us, we, the family of Shay, have been left with no other option but to ask for assistance in raising funds to gather a team of expert Sherpas to locate and bring our beloved Shay home to Ireland.  Time is of the essence in the search mission and the costs of running this mission are substantial.

Shay Lawless is 39 from Bray, Co Wicklow.  He set out on this incredible journey to summit Mount Everest not only to challenge himself but to raise vital funds on behalf of Barretstown, a charity that provides respite and recreation to children with serious illnesses.

At this moment in time we have little to no information about what happened on Thursday 16th May, nor do we know the current location of Shay.  It is our priority to locate him and bring him home and we appreciate all the support that can be offered as we face this hugely challenging situation.39297146_1558119065304823_r.jpeg

We wanted to give an update on the funds raised for the search for Shay Lawless and once again thank everyone who contributed for their kindness, empathy and generosity at a deeply upsetting time.

The funds from the campaign are going into a Department of Foreign Affairs account to facilitate the payments for the costs incurred on Mount Everest. The bill from the Trekking company who co-ordinated the search and rescue attempt will be paid from the fund in the next few weeks.

A donation will be also made to Barretstown, the charity that was so close to Shay's heart and which he was fundraising for on the journey.

All miscellaneous and other costs associated with this tragedy will also be paid from the fund.

If there is any money remaining, we will review things then and update the campaign as soon as we have more information. We have been overwhelmed by people's generosity and support but if you would like a refund from any excesses that may exist we would be grateful if you could reach out to our team here, https://www.gofundme.com/mvc.php?route=contact/suggest , by 3rd July 2019 so we can prepare. Whether this is a percentage or in full will depend on how much money is left after the search and rescue costs are paid.

Thank you again.
The Lawless Family.

We, the Lawless family would like to extend their gratitude for the huge outpouring of support we have received since Shay went missing on Mount Everest last week and to all who donated towards the search operation. In just six days, over €267,000 was donated by more than 7,300 people. Your generosity has been overwhelming and your messages of support mean so much to us. The GoFundMe campaign was instrumental in helping us fund an experienced search team for Shay. Unfortunately it was not successful. While the experienced search team has made every effort to locate Shay, the extremes of operating at high altitude and the sheer range of the search area ultimately proved too difficult and based on expert advice we have decided to call off the search rather than risk endangering anyone's life in the treacherous conditions.

This search operation will be paid for out of this fund and the final cost is still not clear. When it is, it is our wish that any amount above the cost of the search will be accordingly refunded to donors and we will work with the GoFundMe team on that. Although the search mission was unsuccessful we will never forget the kindness and generosity of people in Ireland and around the world who were moved by this tragedy and who came together to try and help us. In particular we’d like to extend our appreciation to the search team led by Noel Hanna, the Sherpas, and to the Ireland on Everest team, Shay’s climbing partners, for doing everything in their power to find Shay for us. The backing we have received from the Irish Government, Barretstown Children’s Charity, Trinity College Dublin and the ADAPT Centre has been tremendous and is a small indication of Shay’s legacy. Thank you.

We would like to extend our thanks to all who have shown such support to the Lawless family at this very difficult time. We'd like to give an update on the plans for the search operation for Shay. The weather is improving on Everest and tomorrow the search will resume. The expedition team, led by Noel Hanna with eight highly skilled Sherpas, has flown to Camp II and will commence their search from Camp IV tomorrow, which is not far from where Shay went missing. The team are also using drone technology to assist them in the search operation and our thoughts and hopes are with them.
