My name is Kathryne Daniels and I live on Vashon Island with my wonderful wife Porter. I am a Field Research Assistant for the Vashon Nature Center where I have volunteered for 4 years. It inspired me to go back to school, so I enrolled in Oregon State University’s Ecampus to major in Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation. The classes I took at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon like the Biology and Conservation of Marine Mammals and Pacific Northwest Coastal Ecosystems, have cemented me on this path to the study of marine mammals and shoreline ecology.I jumped at the chance to apply for the Sea Otter Research Intern position with Monterey Bay Aquarium because it is the perfect marriage between all the things I am passionate about. I will gain valuable experience with telemetry equipment and data as well as energetics and behavior, all very important skills to develop in the study of marine mammals.
Monterey Bay Aquarium has set the gold standard in sea otter research having studied them for more than 30 years. They are a world-renowned organization and well-respected in the marine sciences. Since I grew up in Santa Cruz, the Monterey Bay Aquarium holds a special place in my heart. They truly live up to their mission to inspire conservation of the ocean.
This internship is an incredible opportunity on many levels, but at this time, they do not offer housing and the internship is unpaid for its 6-month duration. I am reaching out to the marine mammal adoring public for donations, this is a great opportunity to support a future marine biologist on the internship of a lifetime!
