Scott's 'Best Case Scenario’ Fund

$7,155 of $11,200 goal

Raised by 90 people in 20 months

To Friends, Family, and Lovers of all Kinds:

updated August 26, 2017

I was at Queen’s Medical Center for five days with my brain surgery. The tumor was stage four Glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer there is.  The staff at Queen’s was great, I’m so appreciative.  The surgeon was able to remove most of the tumor, also had to remove a bit of my brain.

I’m amazed at my recuperation, there’s improvement everyday.  The other day I caught myself starting to run across the street… until my head kicked in (so to speak).

I’m still trying to get used to the prognosis - with treatment, the Doc says I have two years to live.  Of course there are exceptions - I’m not holding on to that statistic to tightly.

Treatments start in two weeks -  Radiation and Chemo
5 times a week for six weeks (yes, that’s right).  Then Chemo five times a month for six months…  sounds devastating to me, but it’s really a day at a time.  My social security disability benefits should kick in in five months…

… until then, the $400 per week goal I need to raise here remains the same…

$400 a week for Food, Incidentals, and Alternative Treatments.

The new goal of $11,200 reflects $400/wk budget till my SS benefit are estimated to start.

I am so grateful for your gifts  and support,
Please contribute whatever you can.

June 27th...
I was experiencing numbness in my left side, CT scans show a 5cm x 2cm tumor in my parietal lobe, on the periphery of the brain - right up against my skull. The good things… It’s not deep in my brain, and there are no other anomalies anywhere - it’s not likely to be malignant.

I’m sticking with that ‘best case’ scenario.

The neurologist here on Maui referred my treatment/surgery to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, so they’re flying me over - I’m still waiting for an appointment from that neurologist’s office. They did tell me the biopsy will probably be done at the time of surgery.

Best case scenario is: I get to Queen’s quickly and it’s a routine deal.

Except, it’s not happening ‘quickly’…  So, I’ve started nutritional and alternative therapies with good results; my goal is to reduce tumor swelling (which created the nerve impingement to left side body motor functions) at least, and keep me off the debilitating anti seizure / steroid meds combo I was taking.

The last day I worked was on June 2nd.
I've applied for Temporary Disability Insurance, SSDI, and SSI - my applications were determined uneligible for all.  I worked two part time jobs, one was not considered for TDI (self employed on a 1099), and I didn’t meet the 20 hr/wk minimum with the other one.  I applied for Public Assistance ( food stamps & welfare) and was denied both. Fortunately, I’ve been covered by Medicare.

I have no expendable income now for daily necessities:
Food, Incidentals, Supplements & Therapy…
That budget comes to $400/wk.  Best case scenario is four months till I can get back to work, so my short term goal is to raise $6,400 in four months.
I’m not addressing the medical costs here, we’ll see what happens  after the insurance sifts through it - a day at a time.

Friends have been helping me get around, and bringing dinner over - I’lll be getting some weekly home health care visits as well, and I’m so very grateful.  The love and support I’ve been receiving from friends and family is humbling - And amazingly beautiful miracles are coming out of left field, from people I don’t even know, Feeling so deeply blessed, no words can express.  The roller coaster of emotion… fear, anger, hopelessness… coupled with the extreme highs in moments of pure love and unmitigated grace - It’s  been the most intense experience of my life, and life-changing for sure.

Any contribution you can make to my ‘Best Case Scenario’ Fund is appreciated greatly.
A monthly gift of any amount will directly contribute to my overall wellbeing in more ways than we’ll probably know, more than the dollar amount attached to it, that’s for sure.  Life is a gift.  Thank You.

If you prefer to contribute directly, you can PayPal or mail, please contact me for the details -  anything is greatly appreciated.

I will follow up with more info as it comes in - right now I’m waiting to get to Honolulu for treatment.

If you are inspired to share this post, please do.

In Love, Light & Aloha -
with sincere grateful thanks,

Scott

Aloha Friends, Family & Supporters…

Thank you for reading my update and for your consideration. It’s not easy for me to ask for help, especially since I thought I wouldn’t need it anymore. My SSDI benefits started at the end of January and I’m very grateful to have it, it’s just enough income to keep me afloat -which does not include necessities currently building up that need attention - my computer needs repair, car registration due, house maintenance (termites) have been eating away at my feeling of security and I see no way to rectify these issues… so here I am. Thank you.

The little bit of my brain removed in surgery seems to be building itself back daily. My coordination has improved dramatically, last week I actually moved my handicap shower chair into the shed. I haven’t used it for a couple months, but kept it next to the tub just in case - it was just in the way!!
I need my cane less and less, the filter I had in my vein for the blood clot in my leg was removed. There was some nerve damage in my foot (I’m guessing from the clot/filter) that is almost completely healed now; what a relief!! My next MRI is coming up in ten days. The MRI can’t tell the difference between tumor and scar tissue, there’s a mass there - we’re just not sure how much of it is cancer. The only way to know is if it starts growing… fingers crossed.

I’m OFF the Anti-Seizure Meds!!!! YAY!!! Can’t tell you how happy I am about that, my eyes are welling up now. The meds I was on have impaired my vision, mostly making the cataract in my right eye much worse - so the next operation (I think) will be cataract surgery, please wish me luck with that, thank you.

My wish list (in addition to the above noted): My best memories from childhood were from our rented vacation cabin in N.E. Maine. My father’s dream was to retire there, so he bought the place and eventually passed away there. My step-mother (an un-ending source of strength for me) is still there and I sure would like to get up there for a visit - it’s a big trip, 24hrs door-to-door and costs about $2,000… I’m seeing myself there, thank you. I also really hope to get back to acupuncture treatments and regular massages. The therapists have given me a discounted rate, but still can’t afford to go on my limited income.... and I need to see the dentist (sorry)!

I’m enjoying writing this update, and keeping you apprised of my situation, so thank you so much for reading through!! One more thing: I hope to be swimming in the ocean very soon - it’s been almost a year and I really miss it, could use the exercise too, I’m really excited about THAT!!

Please contribute what you can, please visit if you can. Thank you so much for your concern and kindness. and,,,, PLEASE SHARE this post. Thank you so very much.

Aloha Friends, Family & Supporters…

I’m just at the end of my second bout with pneumonia - chemo is no fun. And I had a minor weather related fender-bender that ended up totaling my car. No one else was involved and I came out unscathed, so now I’m without a car and figuring out how to replace it has been challenging. Still, I have to think that things could be worse - and they certainly could be.

My brother and sister-in-law were here for Christmas, so glad for their visit, it was way too short but we had a good time, nice to have family around - especially now. I certainly am not adverse to visitors and could really use some more!! If you’re around, please consider dropping by, thank you.

Thank you for your continued support. A stranger (to me) contributed a substantial amount to my fund recently, I can’t express my gratitude and thankfulness … words are too small.

Please contribute what you can, ‘like’ and share this post. I’m so grateful.

In Light, Love & Aloha…
and a warm loving Happy New Year to You!!

Best Always,
Scott
