Scott Miller Memorial Fund

My father-in-law Scott Miller suddenly passed away January 9, 2020, in San Saba, Texas, two weeks after major back surgery. Scott was like a father to me for nearly 22 years, beginning when I was in high school dating his sweet daughter Marsi, and then six years later as his son-in-law after he walked her down the aisle to me. As an adopted and fostered child who has never met my own biological father, he meant the world to me. So much so that I legally changed my middle name to Scott before I married Marsi. I am so, so sad my sweet little girl Landry Joy (with him in the picture) won’t grow up getting to experience her Popsy’s love anymore. She has been asking where he is. Everyone in this family is completely devastated, especially my incredible mother-in-law, Dora, who also lost her mother (our Mamaw Ramona) just three months prior.

Scott was always there for us when we needed him and never let us down. He worked so hard for so many years, sacrificing his strong body and many skills for the benefit of other people. Scott was not a desk job kind of man. He did real, honest, hard, actual work. The legacy of his hard work and great skill can still be seen all over San Saba and other communities. I know there are countless people who can share a story of how Scott was there for them or did something for them, based on the hundreds of people at his funeral and visitation.

Many people have asked me and others in the family how they can help this family who’s suffered two tragedies in 90 days. So I am proposing this: For my 40th birthday on January 17, my wish is for 250 people to give $40 each to raise $10,000 to help Scott's family pay for the bills and costs associated with his surgery, emergency services and funeral, as well as anything else they may need such as food, everyday bills, various expenses or home or vehicle maintenance. Or honestly, whatever the family needs to get by and recover financially, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Keep in mind that about the time the visitors, food, and buzz dies down, the bills likely will arrive. Members of the community and family have already stepped up in a big way to help with certain things, so my goal with this campaign is to supplement that kindness and keep it going when it's most needed. I want the Millers to be able to quickly recover, move forward with their lives and focus on wonderful memories of Scott rather than on expenses. I want them to be happy again, which is what Scott would want.

The $40 amount is just an idea tied to my 40th birthday. Give more or less — whatever you can afford. And the $10,000 is just an arbitrary goal. Anything helps, even if we don't meet the goal.

The Miller family did not ask for this campaign. I just want to do something to give back to a man and his family who have done so much for me.

I will personally see to it that 100 percent of these funds go to Scott's immediate family and their needs.

Please share with everyone you know. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
