Computers for 8th grade science

Donation protected
My name is Anthony Scott, and I am an 8th grade physical science teacher at Sutton Middle School in Atlanta, Georgia.  Sutton is the largest middle school in the Atlanta Public Schools system.

In our science lab (our classroom) we do have technology. We have a Promethian Board at the front of the class, as well as 4 desktop computers to the side. When we need more classroom resources, especially when I want them to research material, or perhaps check out an interactive website, there's the media center. Problem is trying to schedule time to use the computers located in the media center.

There is the option of signing out a technology cart. This is a cart that houses either tablets or laptops for the students to use in the classroom. Again, the problem is scheduling them. I have to compete with other teachers not only in my grade, but also in 6th and 7th grade.

I do let the students use their smartphones from time to time, but more often than not, I wind up confiscating phones from those using social media, texting other students in other classes, or playing games. Fyi... Smartphones are lousy tools to write papers.

At this point, some teachers will complain, shrug, then give up the thought of using individual technology resources altogether.

So I decided to do something. I want my students to know how to research material on the internet. I want to intigrate more interactive electronic examples into my lesson plan where they do it themselves, not just watch me project it on a screen and maybe have 2 or 3 students get up and work an example. I want the whole class to be more involved in the lesson.

So I want to get a set of computers for the classroom. Basic laptops to use for research, writing papers, and interactive lessons. I chose $12,000 for the purpose of getting 28-33 simple no-frills laptops, securing Microsoft Word/PowerPoint/Publisher for each, and getting a cart to house them when not in use.

They will be used and stored in our classroom.

So there you have it. A science teacher who simply wants to use more technology in order to get the students more involved.

Thank you for your time and your help!
