Science and Story - Support Rebecca

Donation protected
Dear Friends, Family and Followers,

I set up this gofundme awhile back to help finance a show I was doing, and received wonderful support! I never reached my goal, and am sharing again with an appeal:

I live in a household that has been running on 3+ incomes and is paycheck to paycheck. We have lost about 30% of our income due to #covid19, and are trying everything in ours and society's arsenals/toolboxes to get through this crisis. I know lots of people are in the same boat and do not wish ANYONE to put themselves out if it will hurt them.

If you are someone who will come out of this crisis largely unscathed financially, I am asking for your support. Ways to support my house and the houses of other artists:

Contribute to my gofundme (link below), or buy a painting, drawing or print! I know that fine art can be expensive, and I have many prints and drawings available for sale at lower prices and have started a series of miniature oil paintings that I will sell in the $200-500 range. Please contribute below or contact me directly if interested.

Thank you to all those who have already supported me in the past.

Stay safe and healthy.

Best,

Rebecca x

“Science and Story”

Since I began painting, my work has been a means of my trying to make sense of the world.  As a graduate student of history, a lover of science and a teacher of literature, I have long been fascinated at how these three themes intersect in how the human race has tried to understand their surroundings and place in the universe.  We study the natural world; we study ourselves and our past; we tell stories in the form of fables, religion and literature. Often times, these bleed into one another. Ancient civilizations told stories in the stars that helped guide them to know when to harvest crops, or how the sun would behave.  Religions developed odd similarities, even among peoples who would have had no contact with one another. Scientific discovery has been wrought with story and intrigue. Despite certain political conflicts, many religious creation stories mirror the theory of evolution.

My work combines these concepts: from historical portraits of unsung female scientists, to scientific still life paintings and astrophysical or natural worlds imbued with mythology attributed to the stars and earth.  Each piece attempts to weave a narrative of how I have made sense of the world, and my perception and observations of how humans as a group have also attempted to make meaning in a chaotic mess of beauty. My portraits focus more on the narrative behind the person than their physical features.  My having experienced the world as a woman shifts my focus to that particular epistemology. Much of my work explores the triumphs and violence women have experienced throughout our history and our stories, and how we have navigated our world to survive and thrive.

I paint in the 'mische technique'; a method of layering oil glazes with egg tempera developed by German/Flemish Renaissance masters. The luminosity, subtlety, and fine detail yielded from working in the mixed technique allows me to communicate themes important to my work.

Though my academic background is in the study of history, I have always created art and studied independently. Primarily self-taught until the age of 24, my work leapt forward after taking Philip Rubinov-Jacobson's Old Masters seminar outside Vienna. I have since delved further into the techniques of the old masters as well as studied color and anatomy at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle and worked independently with the masterful and kind Hamid Zavareei as a mentor, as well as revisited Philip Rubinov-Jacobson's seminar when the opportunity arose in Boulder, Colorado.
