In 1969 Father Jerry Schubert founded the Department of Theatre and Speech at Allentown College of St. Francis DeSales. It was a Theatre Department with no theatre, no scene shop and a casting pool of 13 male freshmen. This was not an auspicious beginning. But Fr. Schubert had strong faith, an unshakable vision, and the good sense to hire Bill Callahan. Together they laid a strong foundation for the outstanding institution it has become.
Today that little red school house of a college is DeSales University and boasts a Division of Performing and Fine Arts with majors in Dance, Theatre and TV/Film. It has a faculty of 18 and an adjunct and artistic staff numbering 17, a student body of 230 and a nationally respected reputation.
In 1991 Fr. Schubert founded the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. It is the Official Shakespeare Festival of Pennsylvania. Now in its 24th season, over a half million people have been entertained at the annual festival.
Fr. Schubert has spent much of the last 10 years writing Give Beauty Back, an historical memoir of the Theatre Department from its inception until his retirement in 1999 and Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival until his retirement in 2001. The book (including many photographs from these years) is now completed and ready for publication. There's the rub. Publication will cost.
We alumni, friends and family have an opportunity to show the Theatre community how much Fr. Schubert and his legacy mean to us and the art by raising the $35,000 needed to publish Give Beauty Back.
