Southern Cayuga BackPack Program

The Southern Cayuga Anne Frank Tree Project is conducting its annual Ton of Food Campaign to raise funds to support the Southern Cayuga BackPack Program.  Through this program students identified by the school as being at risk of hunger on the weekends are provided with a backpack of child-friendly, nutritious food items on Fridays and during school breaks.  The main focus of the program is to reduce the weekend hunger gap and help children return to school better prepared to learn.  The BackPack Program also funds school meals for students in need, the Summer Mobile Pantry for children, the Children’s Birthday Bag Project and continued food support for children who graduate from the BackPack Program. 

 The King Ferry Food Pantry is able to purchase much of its food from the Food Bank of CNY for an average shared maintenance fee of 19¢ per pound or $380 per ton.  Our goal is raise funds to purchase at least 12 tons of food which will help to feed hungry children in our school district during the coming year. 

Hunger deprives our children of more than just food.  According to the Feeding America organization, 1 in 5 children in New York State struggles with hunger.  Children who do not have an adequate diet are more likely to have trouble concentrating and bonding with other children, and are more likely to perform poorly on standardized testing leading to a greater risk of dropping out of school in later years.  A child’s chance for a bright future begins with getting enough healthy food to eat today, giving them the energy they need to learn and grow.
