Sawyer’s Seafaring Scholarship Fund

Welcome to Sawyer Lair Cote’s page....We are all so grateful for the huge outpouring of love and support from every single one of you...thank you for considering a donation instead of flowers, he would appreciate this so much more. We will be setting up a Maritime related scholarship fund at our local high school in his name. This could be used by a Maritime focused college student or, for someone like Sawyer, who just wanted to start working his butt off, and needs to get Certifications, some Maritime training, and gear. We will be consulting his favorite mariners about the fine tuning of this!

When Sawyer was a senior in high school, a couple of his favorite teachers called his mom in for a meeting. Their advice was that if he was opting for college, it should be Maine Maritime. They also told him this and he promptly came home, shared the thought with his mom...saying “why the hell would I want to spend my life on a boat?? I hate boats!” Six months later our favorite local tugboat captain told Sawyer, in NO uncertain terms, that he was coming to work with him. And there, at DonJon, he found not just another family of people he loved, but a job that suited his enormous personality.
He and his amazing girlfriend Justice moved to North Carolina because of one of those people...and so he could ride his beloved motorcycle whenever he was home off the boat. They went everywhere on that bike....to Texas and back, Daytona, riding The Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee multiple times. This summer he and his friends Terry and Jr embarked on an insane 48 state tour in 12 days. He was doing exactly what he loved and living his life to its fullest. Not enough of us can say that!

He lived a GIGANTIC life for such a young man. He had it going on. He was the biggest, kindest, dingdong, badass savage you could ever meet. DAMN we are all missing him, his grin and bear hugs...and mostly wishing we got to see where his next adventure would lead. It is our hope, that with this fund, we can help a few or even many, young people find the path to their own giant adventures. Thank you all for your help.
