The James Bell Tavern has stood for 236 years. It has welcomed travelers, politicians and local settlers in the early days of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

One of the most historical events that occurred at the tavern was on July 3, 1788, when Antifederalists Robert Whitehill, James Bell, William Findley, John Smilie,  and Benjamin Blyth met to discuss the ratification of U.S. Constitution without a Bill of Rights. These men also fought in the Revolutionary War.

During that meeting, a letter was drafted that would be sent to representatives throughout the state to appoint delegates to attend the Harrisburg Convention on September 3, 1788, where a Declaration of Rights would be drafted.  The Harrisburg Convention was the only convention to held outside of Philadelphia where opponents of the U.S. Constitution without a Bill of Rights was discussed.

On January 6, 2016, Triple Crown, present owners of the tavern, had contractors begin to demolish the building. Once the Silver Spring Township staff became aware of the demolition, a stop order was issued. However, since the owner received the permit for legally, there was nothing the Township could do, so the stop order was lifted. The owner has voluntarily stopped the demolition. Silver Spring Township staff and Triple Crown are now in discussion regarding saving the tavern.

A group of concerned citizens is now trying to raise funds to pay for the stabilization of the building and eventually purchase it from Triple Crown.

We need your help. Please contribute to saving the tavern so future generations can learn of its history and the role it played in the early days of the United States of America.  If you would like to pay by check, please contact me through GoFundMe.

Thank you and God Bless America.

We've been busy & things have been happening since the last update -
1. Our FB page continues to grow. We're not too far from 500 but would love to see 1,000 followers by the middle of next week. FB page https://www.facebook.com/SavethehistoricBellTavern/

2. On March 1, Eric Kelso, Mary Duncan and I met with contractors experienced in 18th-century construction to get their expertise on saving the tavern. They said the foundation and the main beams are in good condition and therefore, the tavern is salvageable. However, two of the main beams are open to the weather and need to be covered. I am currently looking into how soon the tavern can be shored up in order to protect the beams and to prevent further damage being done to the tavern.

3. On February 27 Eric Kelso sent a press release to various news agencies and by Monday, we had a media implosion, which was great! Our story was aired on local stations CBS 21, ABC27, and Fox43. We were also in the newspaper - Sentinel and The Patriot-News.

4. On Feb. 25 a group of about 18 - 20 people met to officially organize Patriots of Capt. Bell's Tavern Association. Our next mtg is scheduled for March 16 - Tentative location is Wegman's Cafe.

5. We will also be working with Preservation PA to use their 501 3C in order to make donations tax deductible.

6. On March 14 I will be on Good Day PA with Amy Kehm. This is a local 30 minute live talk show, which can be viewed at 12:30 p.m. locally on WHTM27 or online at http://abc27.com/always-on/

7. I attached a video here of Kevin Hollowell holding a piece of the tavern wall and how the tavern was built in the 18th-century.
