Save Shy Ridley From Homelessness!

Donation protected
"Sadly, in America today, it is very expensive to be poor." ~ Sen. Bernie Sanders, 12/8/2015, Baltimore.

Shy Ridley, a dear friend, political activist, and National Bernie Delegate from Dundalk, Maryland, recently had her home foreclosed due to a Property Tax Sale. But, this is not just her residence; it has been in the family since 1946, and was her parents’ first home. She has lived in the house since 1989, and was deeded it in 2000.

Shy is a retired customer service advisor for American Airlines, and is a committed advocate for social and economic justice. She is a former Board Member of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), the Community Assistance Network in Dundalk, and a former Branch Secretary of the Baltimore County NAACP.

Shy was very active during the Sanders campaign, and volunteered with Maryland For Bernie, MoCo For Bernie, and Baltimore For Bernie. Eventually, she was selected for a National Delegate slot, a week prior to the DNC Convention, when a Maryland State Delegate dropped out. She continues to support Bernie Sanders’ political revolution through The Sanders Institute and Our Revolution.

However, to pursue her political and social justice activities, Shy needs both a home and a car. Without the money to redeem her house before the February 14th court date, she may very well end up homeless - forced to leave her modest residence of nearly 30 years.

Shy, now 67, lives on a very meager Social Security retirement check, and she has no pension. US Airways terminated their employee pension plans, as a result of back-to-back bankruptcies shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. US Airways eventually purchased American Airlines, and retained their name in 2015.

After contracting shingles around her left eye and forehead in September, and having no health insurance to cover the costs, Shy still owes more than $400 in medical bills. She was partially blind for two months, and suffered in excruciating pain, due to not being able to fill her prescriptions.

Furthermore, Shy has been virtually homebound since her 1999 automobile broke down in November, 2016. She suffers from depression and neuralgia, and it has only been exacerbated by the isolation she has suffered from not having a transportation to attend political and social activities. To live out her retirement to its fullest, she needs repairs done to her car’s exhaust system to pass the Emissions Test before January 26th; otherwise, the car registration will be suspended.

Total Costs:

I. Foreclosure fees $2,489.44
II. Delinquent Property Taxes $1,930.83
III. Medical Bills $ 410.00
IV. Car Repairs $1,000.00
---------------
Total $5,830.27

Shy has managed to save $2,100, but she still needs your generous support to reach the goal of $4104 (rounded).

Please donate $27 or more, only if you're able, so that Shy Ridley can get back on her feet again! Her car needs repairs by January 26, to prevent her car registration suspension, and she doesn’t have much longer to pay the foreclosure fees and taxes, prior to the February 14th court hearing.

I hope you will help such a dedicated activist and a kind human being! Please remember to share this GoFundMe campaign with your friends.

Thank you so very much for your prayers and contributions to 'Save Shy Ridley From Homelessness'.
