On April 1st, 2016 Maya was reported to have been run over in the middle of a busy street in Cartagena, Colombia. We later learned that Maya had not only been run over once, but twice.  After being run over, Maya attempted to drag herself to safety on the side of the road, but before she could make it, she was plowed over by another vehicle. Her spinal cord was broken in half and she was left on the side of the road in 90 degree weather with no help and excruciating pain.

Luckily a woman name Jannah came to her rescue and took her to an emergency vet. Doctors told us that she would never walk again and was paralyzed for life. Dr. Ingrid Hernandez Soto agreed to receive Maya at her foundation FRAD in Cartagena and began an experimental treatment on her spinal cord and nerves in order to see if she could recuperate them.  Maya was a very special dog. Despite of her injury, she would use all of her strength to crawl on her front paws, with her legs dragging behind her in hopes to find love or affection from anyone nearby. She was a lover and a fighter.

After 4 months of treatment, Maya began to show progress and was beginning to put weight on her hind legs. From there she began to take steps and now today almost 11 months later she is one active, happy and playful girl, who can walk, jump and play!

Maya did suffer nueral damage and does have a minor problem of urinary and fecal Incontinence. Knowing this, it would be very hard to find Maya a home here in Colombia, especially with her condition. However, an amazing rescue called Buffalo Cares (Buffalo, NY) has agreed to take Maya in and already has an experienced foster to help Maya adjust and later be adopted out to her forever home.

We are working with a very short time period here and need to fundraise 800 dollars in order to fly her from Cartagena, Colombia to New York City and then transported on the ground to Buffalo, NY where she will be taken in by Buffalo Cares. Maya is without a doubt a Cartagena Paws Miracle and we would be so happy to fly her home to Buffalo, NY.  Our scheduled flight date is Saturday March 4th. One week away! Let's get Maya home to safety!
