Save Last Mountain/Qu'Appelle Lakes

Save Last Mtn/Qu'Appelle Lakes Inc. is registered as a Charitable Non-Profit Organization to preserve and protect the quality and quantity of fresh water and the environment of Last Mountain Lake and the Qu'Appelle chain of lakes and activities related thereto.

Save Last Mtn/Qu’Appelle Lakes Inc. is a group of concerned citizens working together with the Saskatchewan Alliance for Water Sustainability (SAWS) to sustain and enhance water quality and reduce the risk of flooding of water of Last Mountain Lake, Fishing Lakes, Pasqua, Katepwa, Crooked Lake and Round Lake for present and future residents and the natural environment.
Save Last Mtn/Qu'Appelle Lakes Inc with SAWS is working to prevent the diversion of water from the Quill Lakes Basin into the Qu’Appelle Watershed in the absence of an adequate and impartial full environmental impact assessment and public consultation.

1.      To prevent the manmade diversion of water from the Quill Lake Basin into the Qu’Appelle Watershed.

2.      To support the development of an acceptable solution to the continued flooding of the Quill Lakes and preventing the potential natural spill of the Quill Lakes Basin into the Qu’Appelle Watershed.

3.      To review all phases of the Quill Lakes Diversion project and ensure that all phases undergo an environmental assessment including accumulative impacts.

4.      To support the enforcement of drainage regulations in the Quill Lakes Basin.

5.      To help develop formal and informal structures that advance sustainable livelihoods, quality of life, and ecosystem health in the Quill Lakes Basin and Qu'Appelle Watershed on the basis of wise stewardship of freshwater resources, broad inclusion of stakeholders, and win-win solutions

Please note the Quill Lakes Watershed Association (QLWA) has not cancelled their application to the Water Security Agency for a drainage project. They have simply withdrawn the current construction proposal.  In their news release of January 22, 2018 the QLWA state that there wasn't enough time left to acquire the appropriate studies and requirements to be granted approval by our spring construction deadline.  It’s not over.  They will continue to pursue their drainage plan.

The Quill Lakes Drainage project would result in the degradation of water quality in the Qu'Appelle chain for recreation and household use, create a danger to fish and aquatic life,  risk increasing rising lake levels, create a reduction in property values  and businesses in lake communities would suffer.

QLWA don’t have time to meet the appropriate requirements by spring runoff so they’ll try to get them in place for the fall of 2018.  It will take our legal team a good deal of time to review the file and prepare a case.
The Court case has been postponed numerous times by agreement of both legal representatives with the next date being March 27, 2018. There is a restriction on digging from 1 April to 31 October so the result of the court case may have no impact until November 2018.

This is a very serious situation.  If the drainage diversion proposal is approved, we could see much more water released from the Quill Lake watershed than what is proposed in Phase One.  Because QLWA have stated on numerous occasions that Phase One is not the whole project, that “the segments of the project proposal that had been submitted were just pieces of a larger puzzle.” Currently, there are four phases of the QLWA drainage project that are being developed over time.

Last Mountain Lake will be the entry point of high saline water and loaded with farm chemicals and pollutants.  The damage to our water quality  and fisheries will be irreversible.

Donations will pay for the cost of legal professionals, media consultants, environmental experts and publication costs in pursuit of the mandate and objectives of Save Last Mtn/Qu'Appelle Lakes Inc.

Residents,  families, municipalities, businesses, fish associations, nature or wildlife groups, the environment, fish and fauna that live or enjoy the Qu'Appelle Lakes or the Assiniboine River Basin  will benefit from this campaign.  Thank you for supporting our important campaign.
