The backstory
Hello, my name is Isabel Schumacher and I am a German medical student in my final year. After high school I spent six months in Guatemala as part of an international volunteering program. After that experience, I kept close contacts with the great people I met over there.
One of them is Brenda, a member of the family I stayed with. She is a 34 years old married woman and the mother of two sweet girls.
Brenda is the reason why I started this campaign.
The cause
Last year she had a terrible motorbike accident, and a bus crushed her legs. The initial operation and the follow-up treatments were conducted in a public hospital but in a very unprofessional way. Due to medical malpractice, her legs are now in the conditions you can see from the pictures.
She is suffering from a chronic infection of the proximal right femur bone, meaning that she needs an antibiotic therapy and the amputation of her right leg as soon as possible. Indeed, the risk of septicemia, and therefore of death, is extremely high.
The costs
Because of the terrible conditions of the Guatemalan public health system, she must do these treatments either in a private clinic in Guatemala or somewhere abroad.
In Guatemala, this would cost her at least 25.000 euros (around 10.000 euros for the antibiotic regimen and 15.000 euros for the amputation itself) plus additional expenses for the necessary follow-up treatment.
Brenda and her family cannot afford to pay this amount of money. The average annual income of a lower-middle-class worker in Guatemala is 1600 euros, and the family is already struggling since Brenda has been bedridden for over a year now and cannot work anymore.

Brenda hatte letztes Jahr einen schrecklichen Motorrad-Unfall, bei dem ein Bus über ihre Beine gerollt ist. Sie wurde in einem öffentlichen Krankenhaus in Guatemala behandelt. Leider wurden bei der Behandlung grundlegende Fehler begangen, sodass ihre Beine noch immer nicht ansatzweise verheilt sind (s. Bilder oben).
Sie leidet unter einer chronischen Infektion des rechten proximalen Oberschenkelknochens und benötigt daher so schnell wie möglich eine antiobiotische Therapie und die Amputation des rechten Beines. Ohne diese Therapie ist die Gefahr für eine tödliche septische Streuung der Infektion sehr hoch.
Die Kosten:
Da die Bedingungen in den öffentlichen Krankenhäusern in Guatemala katastrophal sind, muss Brenda entweder in einer privaten Klinik in Guatemala oder im Ausland behandelt werden.
Die Kosten für eine Behandlung in einer privaten Klinik in Guatemala belaufen sich auf 25.000 Euro (10.00 Euro für die antibiotische Therapie und 15.000 Euro für die Operation). Dazu kommen noch weitere Kosten für die Nachversorgung und die Schmerztherapie.
Für Brenda und ihre Familie ist es unmöglich so viel Geld bereit zu stellen. Das durchschnittliche Jahreseinkommen von jemanden aus ihrer gesellschaftlichen Schicht (untere Mittelklasse) beträgt 1600 Euro. Die Familie kann sich auch ohne die Komplikation kaum ernähren, da Brenda seit einem Jahr bettlägerig ist und nicht mehr arbeiten kann.

En el ano pasado tuvo un accidente horrible en su moto y un bus arrolló sus piernas. La trataron en un hospital público en Guatemala. Por mala suerte el tratamiento era mal hecho. Por eso sus piernas todavia están muy mal (vease las fotos).
Está sufriendo de una infección crónica del hueso de su muslo derecho. Por tanta, necesita urgente una antibioterapia y la amputación de la pierna derecha. Si no, el riesgo de una septicemia letal es muy alta.
El costo:
Porque los hospitales públicos de Guatemala no son en buena condición, ella tiene que ser tratada en un hospital privado o en otro país. En Guatemala cobrían al menos 25.000 euros para el tratamiento (10.000 euros para los antibioticos y 15.000 euros para la operación).
Este precio no incluye gastos adicionales para medicamentos contra el dolor y el tratamiento postoperativo. Brenda y su familia no pueden encontrar tanto dinero. De promedio, en Guatemala un obrero gana 1600 euros por ano.
La familia de Brenda ya tiene dificultades, porque Brenda está encamada desde hace el accidente y ya no puede trabajar .

La motivazione
Un anno fa, Brenda ha avuto un terribile incidente con lo scouter e un autobus le ha schiacciato le gambe. Ha subito una prima operazione in un ospedale pubblico, ma le cure sono state prestate in modo del tutto approsimativo. A causa della condotta a dir poco criminale del personale medico, le sue gambe sono adesso ridotte nelle condizioni che potete vedere nelle foto.
Ora Brenda ha una severa infezione cronica al femore destro, il che significa che ha bisogno urgente di una terapia antibiotica e dell’amputazione della gamba. Il rischio di setticemia, e quindi di morte, e’ infatti molto elevato.
I costi
Considerate le terribili condizioni in cui versa il sistema sanitario pubblico guatemaltese, per ricevere le suddette cure Brenda deve necessariamente ricorrere o ad una clinica privata in Guatemala o ad un ospedale estero.
I costi minimi dei trattamenti in Guatemala sono di 25.000 euro (all’incirca 10.000 euro per il trattamento con antibiotici e 15.000 euro per l’amputazione), senza considerare le spese per le cure successive all’operazione.
Brenda e la sua famiglia non possono nemmeno lontanamente permettersi di affrontare un tale costo.
