Save St Sofia Church in Macedonia

Summary

CyArk needs your help - we are in need of funds to conduct 3D mapping work at the world heritage site of Sveta Sofia (St Sofia Church) in Ohrid, Macedonia in the fall of 2018. CyArk is supporting the work of the Ministry of Culture of Macedonia which is in need of accurate drawings and documentation to support the restoration of the church. St Sofia contains beautiful frescoes from the 11th, 12th and 14th centuries and are some of the best examples of its type in the world. They are in poor condition and this will be the first restoration work on the frescoes since the 1950s.

CyArk is a non-profit located in Oakland, California which specializes in the 3D mapping of cultural heritage sites providing these services for free to heritage sites across the world. CyArk also keeps a copy of this data in its archive for posterity in case of damage or destruction to support rebuilding efforts. Your donation will support our work on this project in the coming months including the work of our field team to capture the data and our production team to process this data into engineering drawings that the Ministry can use in the upcoming restoration. We have already funds from our donor base but are in need of $10,000 to begin work on the project.

About Sveta Sofia

We have been contacted by the Ministry of Culture of Macedonia to assist them in documentation efforts surrounding Sveta Sofia (St. Sofia) for the ongoing management and restoration of the site. Sveta Sofia is located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, Europe’s deepest lake with a unique ecosystem. The natural and cultural heritage of the Ohrid region was inscribed to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1979 - one of the earliest properties to have been inscribed to the list. The town of Ohrid is a medieval town with spectacular examples of Byzantine architecture. St Sofia, as seen today, was built on top of the foundations of an earlier Christian church. As in other medieval towns and cities the church, as the center of political and social activities, stands centrally within the town.  The original church, built from the local stone and brick, had only one main dome. The church expanded in time. The church contains a number of frescoes that reflect key developments in the Christian world at the time.

CyArk's 3D Mapping Work at Sveta Sofia

The documentation of the exterior and the interior of the church, with a focus on the frescoes, will be conducted under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Macedonia, in coordination with the Ohrid Municipality. Further, CyArk will provide a knowledge transfer workshop where heritage professionals from Macedonia who will be able to acquire a high level of understanding of the equipment and methodology that CyArk uses to capture, process, archive, and share photorealistic 3D models of heritage sites.

CyArk will focus on three levels of documentation at Saint Sophia, Ohrid, using unmanned aerial systems at a ground resolution of approximately 20mm per pixel. Second, CyArk proposes to record the external facades of all architectural features as well as the internal space of Saint Sophia at a ground resolution of approximately 5 millimeters per pixel. Finally, CyArk will document the frescoes within the church at a sub millimeter per pixel resolution. We will utilize drone imagery, terrestrial laser scan data and high resolution medium format imagery shot from the ground to document the church.

When we return from the field we will use this data to produce a number of architectural drawings, including detailed plans, section and elevations drawings that will assist the Ministry in their evaluation of the site and these documents will contribute towards the detailed plans for further restoration and conservation work at the site. CyArk will also archive this data in our state of the art repository, ensuring that a record of the site exists for generations to come. Finally, we will make all the raw data available to researchers and educators via our Open Heritage portal to assist in knowledge building.

Any support you can provide is greatly appreciated and we will keep you up to date on our progress.
