Save Schooner Reef Chief/ Hurricane
BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC WOODEN SCHOONER REEF CHIEF SUFFERED MAJOR DAMAGE DURING HURRICANE IRMA IN KEY WEST ON SEPT. 10, 2017
SHE WAS ON A 2500# MOORING WHEN OTHER BOATS SLAMMED INTO HER.
HER MOORING LINES PARTED, CHAIN BROKE IN A TORNADO AND SHE WAS BLOWN ACROSS A SHALLOW CORAL BANK AND UP ON CHRISTMASS TREE ISLAND.
HER 10" 50 FOOT FOREMAST IS BROKEN AT THE DECK, HER FOREFOOT BETWEEN THE STEM AND BALLAST KEEL WAS TORN OFF, ALL THE BOTTOM PAINT IS RUBBED OFF AND SOME SEAMS ARE EXPOSED.
ONE BOATYARD REQUIRES A $10,000 DEPOSIT TO HAUL AND THE COST OF REPAIRING THE HULL, BULLWARKS, RIGGING AND MAST(S) ARE ESTIMATED AT ABOUT $50,000.
PLUS THE COST OF PULLING HER OFF CHRISTMASS TREE ISLAND BY THE SALVOR WAS $7500.
LEAKING IS TEMPORARILY SLOWED THANKS TO MANY FRIENDS AND SPLASH ZONE UNDERWATER EPOXY COMPOUND.
NOW THE SCHOONER IS FLOATING ON ONE BILGE PUMPS.
SCHOONER REEF CHIEF NEEDS TO BE HAULED AND FIXED ASAP.
Reef Chief hauled at small boatyard in old town Key West.
My son Cody came all the way from Oregon to help.
We slammed for a week.
Fixed the keel. Attached the 12' forefoot shoe that broke off. Caulked all butts with cotton and all seams where caulking had been scraped off when Reef Chief went across shallow coral bank on her side. Ground the chafed wood smooth.
Painted the bottom with 3 coats bottom paint and painted the topsides.
Friends Eddie and Nado helped.
