My name is Oluchi Emmanuella Anansonwu. I am a female and am 23yrs old from Idemili North local government of Anambra State.
I have been diagnosed with a rare form of Neuromuscular Disease which causes weakness and wasting of the muscles in the arm and legs (proximal muscle) specifically the muscles of the shoulder, upper arms, pelvic area and thighs It also affects the muscle of the heart and lungs. It is a progressive condition, which means it gets worse over time. It often begins by affecting a particular group of muscles, before affecting the muscles more widely,eventually it affects the heart or the muscles used for breathing, at which point the condition becomes life-threatening.
The problem started since I was a toddler and my parents have been spending their meagre resources on me. In fact, I could not attend regular university because of this problem but I attended National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) where I graduated with 2:1 in Computer Science.
Since am unable to move around due to the extreme weakness I feel often,I attended school with the help of my father who carries me at his back whenever I want to go out or use the stairs and we live in a 2 storey building the last floor, now my father has chest and waist pain because of me.
I am unable to stand from my sitting position or walk by myself, this makes it difficult to go out and do some activities for myself
It has been the grace of God otherwise the situation could have become worse since I do not have enough fund to go for comprehensive medical attention. I have to cry out now so that my dream will not die. The doctors said Stem Cell therapy is the only answer to stop the progression of the disease and it cannot be done here in Nigeria. I have consulted an Indian hospital which the doctors said its possible to cure and the price is $15000
I am appealing to well meaning Nigerians to come to my aid...PLEASE DON'T ALLOW MY DREAMS BECOME NIGHTMARE.
