Save Mr. Freckles

Donation protected
Mr Freckles is our foster dog through Senior Dog Rescue of Oregon (SDRO) and he needs knee surgery in order to survive.

Freckles is an 11-year old Australian cattle dog who found himself as a rescue when his elderly owner died.  He was not in great shape when he came to us.  In addition to seeming disoriented and sad from the loss of his beloved human, Freckles was diagnosed with lupus (which makes his nasal passages inflamed) and a thyroid condition (that left him about 30 pounds overweight).  With the support of Senior Dog Rescue and All Creatures Great and Small Veterinary practice, we have been managing both of these conditions and Mr. Freckles' health was improving markedly, his nose was turning healthy pink, and his weight was going down.  Unfortunately, this week one of Mr. Freckles' back knees blew out-- a torn canid cruciate ligament from his tiny legs carrying about twice as much weight as intended.

Mr. Freckles' knee can be repaired, but the surgery is expensive, definitely more than SDRO can afford.  Or, put another way, SDRO is very careful with its funds, in order to help as many dogs as possible, which means that expending a large sum on a single dog is not a typical choice for the organization.  Senior Dog Rescue is powered by private donations and the volunteered time of its administrators and fosterers.  There is little overhead: all of the money they raise goes directly to caring for and rehoming senior dogs.  Mr. Freckles' knee injury is severe enough, and painful enough, that if he cannot have knee surgery the vet has recommended euthanizing him.

We have grown to love Freckles, and strongly believe that he deserves to live his golden years in full health, in the care of a loving adoptive home.   He is a tender, gentle dog with a winning grin (as you can see in the pictures).  He's a peaceful soul, too, and seems to enjoy the company of our family dog and our cats.  And he likes cuddling.   A lot.

Our family is committed to caring for him through his surgery and recovery until he find his forever family, but we cannot do this without funding to help SDRO cover his surgery.   Donations of any size, no matter how small, are deeply appreciated so that we can return this big-hearted  boy to his feet.

UPDATE: The final estimate of cost for surgery is $2500 so I raised our goal to $1500 to cover at least half the cost.  THANK YOU to everyone who has donated!!!!!
