This is the story of when Dr. Linn, one of the vets at Racecourse Veterinary Hospital in Ballina, NSW, went to Mexico recently.

One morning she found a street dog sleeping outside her room in Chacahua, a little surf spot on a remote beach on the west coast of Mexico far away from civilization. The dog had one of the most horrific injuries Linn had seen. A local told her he had been hit with a stick leaving most of the left side of his jaw bone fully exposed. The wound was badly infected and the dog was in very poor condition. He was full of fleas, ticks, very skinny and barely able to walk. Linn couldn’t ignore the fact that the dog had chosen to sleep right outside a veterinarian’s door of all the places! It was meant to be.
Something had to be done for this poor sweet little dog.

She took him to the nearest veterinary clinic in Puerto Escondido, where they also found out Chaky had Anaplasmosis - a tick borne disease causing him to be very sick. He was immediately admitted to hospital for intensive care.
Chaky luckily survived the infection however, the large wound on his face still requires treatment. A local vet was able to perform reconstructive surgery on the facial wound. Although the first surgery went well, Chaky will likely need 1 or 2 more surgeries before the wound will fully heal. He is getting stronger and stronger every day.

During Linn's time in Mexico she saw many street dogs in very poor condition, just like Chaky.
There are approximately 18,000 dogs and 14,000 cats in Puerto Escondido. Nearly all of these animals roam the streets, homeless, reproducing freely and scrounging for food wherever available. These animals are neglected and become sick, malnourished, abused and are often found injured or hit by cars. The Mexican people need help to control the overpopulation but also need education in animal health.

The local vet Dr. Alejandro, is known as "The Dog Guy" of Puerto Escondido. He is well known to many of the people for his passion and love for animals. Since he moved to Puerto in 1999, he has been helping the community to take care of street dogs and tackling the issue of overpopulation.  In 2014, he founded the not for profit organization "Esteriliza y Educa” (Sterilization and Education) because the only way to make a real difference in the lives of the animals was to start at the root of the problem.

Linn is desperately asking for your help…

She has already helped Chaky with the payments for all his treatment so far (approximately 1000 AUD). He will need to get further treatment and also he needs to be de-sexed. Linn is also planning to adopt him and importation into Australia is very costly.

Dr. Alejandro and the organisation Esteriliza Educa are desperately trying to raise 20 000 peso more ($1400 AUD) to be able to organise another de-sexing campaign for 300 animals.
One street animal can be de-sexed for only $20. Keep in mind, in 6 years one unspayed female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs - that is many saved dogs!

Hi everyone, It's been a little while since last update and a lot of things has happened with our little man!

He is in Canada and has been getting dental specialists treatment for his jaw. He has had multiple surgeries but it sounds like he might have had the last surgery very recently! He has had his E-collar on for the last 12months and they took it off the other day so we are very hopeful that he can live a normal life from now on! He has had surgeries for over $3000 so I'm reaching out the last time to fund some more money to cover his bills. Anything will help! Lets finalise this long road to recovery!
Oh and if you are down Lennox Head way today (Sat 2nd June), I will be raising money for Chaky & the Mexican street dogs at the Love Lennox Festival, http://lovelennox.com.au/dogs-of-lennox/
so come down and have fun with the dogs! There will be a raffle on with great prizes & lots of fun dog competitions.
I appreciate your support!

Hi everyone, just an update about 'Chaky' The Mexican street dog. He has now completed the 2nd and 3rd surgery to correct his jaw, the surgeries went well and hopefully he won't need anymore surgeries. However, I still need to pay his surgery bills, so please help this boy by donating now!

We are planning to get him to Canada the 19th of Jan 2018 & then hopefully bring him to Australia as soon as possible. However there is a long list of blood tests, importation rules, travel expenses etc before we can get him here!

Please spread the word and help get this boy to Australia!

Here are some photos & a little video so you can see how cheeky this Mexican boy is!

THANK you everyone for supporting :)

Hi everyone, just an update from chaky. He is doing well, he has had his stitches removed from his first surgery, however as you can see on the photo he will need a second surgery to cover more of the jaw bone. He has also been desexed thanks to your support! We have found a foster home in Canada for him so we are planning getting him there in December. The Mexican street dog desexing campaign is getting planned as we speak, however they need more funds to be able to run it. Please spread the word to donate, help Chaky get his second surgery done and also get more street dogs desexed!
The outcome of his first surgery, he will need a second surgery to cover more of his bone!
