Tea’ka Negest Bata LeMariam Monastery (A church in commemoration of the Presentation of St. Mary into the Holy Temple) is a church located adjacent to the Grand Palace in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This Church is more than 100-year-old and was built by Empress Zewditu and is a treasure for numerous manuscripts, icons and other ecclesiastic and secular objects of great historical and spiritual significance for Ethiopia. Furthermore, the Church serves as a mausoleum for Emperor Menelik II, his wife Empress Tayitu and his Daughter Empress Zewditu.
Such a beautiful Church of huge historical importance is near collapse and is in immediate need of restoration work. Due to its old age and lack of maintenance the dome is leaking and the Cupola (“Gulilat”) on top of it is in danger of falling off.
This is a call for all Ethiopians and all preservationists of the world to participate in saving this magnificent and Historic building from further collapse.
About the Fundraisers:
This Fundraising is launched by DMMTN Bata Mariam Monastery Restoration Committee. This committee was formed for the sole purpose of restoring the building of The Teaka Negest Bata Lemariam Church in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This committee is registered with the US Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit organization with EIN # 82-4994851 assigned on March 29, 2018. The Church building is more than 100 years old and is a landmark in the capital of the Country and is in dire need of repair to save the dome from collapse due to old age and moisture damage through the years.
The committee consists of Clergy and laypersons of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church living in North America who were alumni of the spiritual school established with this church. The Restoration committe is chaired by Kessis (Reverend) Kefelegne WoldeGiorgis residing in Rockville, Maryland.
The Administration of the Bata Church in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has authorized the formation of this restoration committee to raise most of the fund from the Ethiopian diaspora here in North America in particular and elsewhere in the world.
All the Money raised by this GoFundMe account and other means will be made available for the Church administration in Addis Ababa for the sole purpose of restoring the crumbling church building. All the committee members are volunteers working pro bono.
The funds will be fully used to pay for Engineering and Architectural fees, material, labour and craftsmanship needed for the restoration work to save the church building from ruin.
