Sarah's road to recovery from breast cancer

Those who know Sarah know that she is one of the most vibrant, hilarious, generous, smart and kind people there is. It goes without saying that the diagnosis of breast cancer at age 31 has invariably changed her life, but not the person she is. Sarah has an amazing network of friends, partner and family, and I know all of us will be supporting and seeing her through this.
I’ve known Sarah my whole life. Born only 18 days apart, as cousins we’ve shared decades of christmas stockings, family card games, and birthdays.
More than this though, we are great friends. Over the years, Sarah and I have shared school campuses, friend groups, student houses, concerts, & many late night pizzas. Like many of you, we’ve seen each other through times of joy, heartbreak, adventure and uncertainty. As shocking and difficult as this cancer diagnosis is (and the chemo, surgery and radiation to come), this is only one chapter within an incredible story of life.
Many of us want to find some way that we can help, support, or ease the burden of this illness. Helping can take many different forms, however in today’s world, one of the ways to support is to help ease the financial burden that comes with fighting cancer and preserving fertility. Perhaps not surprisingly there are expenses in the thousands which are not covered by Ontario’s health plan. One of the unfortunate side effects of chemotherapy at this age is infertility, and the out of pocket treatment costs for this are upwards of $10,000.
Beyond direct health care costs, money can be used to help in innumerable other ways; whether that be supporting lost income, order take-out for those long days, or hire a cleaner to conserve energy.
