Sandy's Get Well Soon

When you think of Sandy Thompson, what's the first thing that comes to mind? What's your favourite thing about her? Her humour? The way that she can make you laugh in just about any situation? Or maybe it's the way she always gives the best advice, about literally anything? Or is it how damn smart she is, and how all the useless trivia on the planet resides on the tip of her tongue, always ready to teach you something new? Regardless, if you're reading this now, there's something about her that you love. And now she needs your help.

In May of 2017, Sandy was diagnosed with a tentorial meningioma. For those of you who aren't brain surgeons, this is a type of non-cancerous, slow-growing tumour that was attached to the lining of Sandy's brain, behind her right ear. According to doctors, it had been growing for decades, but they assured us that it was benign. So we counted our blessings, as she began to take steps to have it removed.

Fast forward 18 months, on November 30th 2018, she finally went under the knife. A year and a half of living with a tumour pushing against her brain, and she was finally able to have it removed. When she came home from the hospital 6 days later, the difference was clear. Throughout the next 8 days, her condition continued to improve. She was happier, healthier, and excited for the future.

On the 9th day, however, Sandy got a headache. Now, we've all had headaches, but this one was different. Within 6 hours of the first sign of pain, Sandy was in the emergency room, and within 12 hours, she was struggling with basic communication. This was on December 14th.

6 days, a few misdiagnoses, and a transfer to Hamilton General Hospital later, doctors are still unsure. They know it's an infection, and they know that it's related to the site of the original surgery. But the rest is still unknown.

This roller coaster of emotions has left Sandy's family mentally and physically exhausted. Her husband Jeff has been forced to take numerous days off work, with no pay, to be there for his wife. As a result, the family's finances are currently under a tremendous strain, and with Christmas 5 days away, and Sandy being cared for more than an hour from home, costing an arm and a leg in fuel, parking, and food expenses, we're asking for your help.

Any amount of money that you can part with would be greatly appreciated, not just by Sandy herself, but by her family as well. It will be invaluable in helping them get through this difficult time, and in ensuring that the strong, driven woman that Sandy is will come through this with her indomitable spirit intact.

Thank you so much.
