Sandra Ann " Sandy" Skillings , 54 ,died unexpectedly January 14, 2018 at  home in Casco. Sandy leaves behind her fiancé and devoted soul mate of 25 years, William "Rusty" Russell Keaten ,Jr. of Casco, Maine.
Four years ago Sandy and Rusty were the victims of a violent home invasion where Rusty received a traumatic head injury . Since the injury Rusty has had ongoing seizure issues that require specialized medical care.
As they attempted to put the pieces of their lives back together Sandy lost her mother to cancer. Shortly after Sandy was dealing with the medical need to have two hip replacements in order to walk and not require permenant use of a walker or wheelchair. Sandy made excellent progress and recovered well from these surgeries. As life started to seem more manageable Sandy received a call from her Dr. following a routine mammogram . Within months she had a double mastectomy to reduce the potential of the disease progressing. It was summer and she was optimistic and positive. Prior to her first round of  chemotherapy in October, Sandy received  a dreadful phone call notifying her that Rusty and a friend had been in a serious ATV accident that involved lifeflight, ambulances, hospital transfers and
serious physical injury. With barely enough time to stabilize Rusty, she began treatments.
Throughout these challenges, Sandy fought courageously and optimistically. She maintained a positive outlook and never complained about her struggles. On Sunday January 14, exactly four years after the home invasion , she could no longer endure life's physical or emotional challenges and left it behind.
When such tragic events occur in such a short span of time it is almost impossible to recover. Together Rusty and Sandy got knocked down , got up again, were knocked down again . This time Rusty is the only one able to stand.
As his sister, I am hoping that their family and friends will help financially support Rusty so he can honor Sandy's memory without the worry or stress associated with yet another financial blow.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date at a one of the local veteran halls.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post . Any size contribution is wonderful and much appreciated.
