Samuel was born on November 30, 2015 with a rare congenial disease called Berdon's Syndrome, or Megacystis Microcolon Intestinal Hypoperistalsis Syndrome (MMIHS ).
Children born with MMIHS have their bladder and gastrointestinal system affected by defective, or debilitated organs. In most cases, babies will not live past 4 months due to multiple organ failure, infections or other complications due to the disease. Samuel is strong but he needs your help urgently.
Samuel's only chance for survival is to have a multi-visceral transplant to replace his defective organs.
Samuel and his family live in Brazil, and are of humble origin. This type of multi-organ transplant has never been performed on an infante before in Brazil, and the doctors there lack the resources to perform a surgery of this complexity.
The plan is to bring him to the U.S. meet with Dr. Rodrigo Vianna and the transplant team at Jackson Memorial Hospital (Miami, FL), who have successfully performed this procedure recently and have already accepted Samuel's case.
The estimated cost to bring Samuel to the U.S. and treatment is about
$2,000,000 USD.
Despite all, Samuel always has a smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes of a true warrior! It is impossible not to fall in love with him.
Fevers and/or infections due to his condition keep him coming back to the hospital too often for anyone his age.
This disease makes it impossible for the digestive system to function, among other organs. He can only receive food through a tube connected directly to his small intestines, which further compromises his liver function.
