In 2006, Ed LeTourneau was involved in a serious car accident and sustained multiple injuries – injuries that involved a long recovery time. He still experiences after affects from the broken neck and back injuries.
While visiting a doctor for his back and neck pain, Ed was told that they saw a tumor on his spine and there was a very high possibility that he had bone cancer. He was devastated. He didn’t know what to do or where to turn for help. After getting other opinions that agreed with the first doctor, he went to the Mayo Clinic to see if they could be of any help. Fortunately, they were and Ed has been cleared of any chance of bone cancer.
This was a very scary time for Ed. He didn’t want to talk to anyone about what he was going through and he kept many of his thoughts and feeling to himself. It also made him take a good, long look at his life. He began to think about his legacy. How would people remember him if he were to die? What had he done to leave his mark on the world and help others?
During this introspection, Ed discovered the one thing he truly felt he missed out on and that he would change, if he got the opportunity. He wanted to serve his country. Once medically cleared of life-threatening illness, he knew he couldn’t enlist, so he started thinking of ideas for what he could do. This is where Salute the Armed Forces was born.
Salute the Armed Forces is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping veterans transition from military to civilian life. The organization’s mission is to help develop the most successful, well-adjusted generation of veterans in our great nation’s history. Their 5-Star Program® was designed to meet the needs of veterans returning to civilian life, have them help each other, to raise public awareness and to provide aid for the needs of our veteran heroes.
One of the biggest needs Ed has discovered while helping veterans is help with learning a new trade. Nearly fifty percent of participants show a distinct aptitude for the building and construction trades. To fill that need, Ed is opening Veteran University.
The curriculum at Veteran University is designed to take students from the classroom to work site job readiness in a matter of weeks using state-of-the-art training techniques and facilities.
Ed has put all his resources into driving this project forward. Now it’s time to invite others to help keep his legacy of helping veterans alive. Ed needs help in supporting our nation’s everyday heroes.
