“When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.”

Last December, the Blouin Global Scholars from Walsh University traveled to Gulu, Uganda to learn about the mass atrocities that were committed in the north for over twenty years.  The Lord’s Resistance Army, led by Joseph Kony who claimed to be protecting the Acholi tribe from governmental oppression, accused the Acholi people of supporting the Ugandan government; the government, led by current president Yoweri Museveni, accused them of supporting the LRA. The Acholi tribe was caught in the middle.  The LRA and the government brutally murdered hundreds of thousands of people, displaced over 1.5 million, burned entire villages to the ground, and enslaved and raped millions of children and women.   Furthermore, the millions forced into allegedly "safe" internally displaced persons camps experienced additional violations to basic human rights, including: lack of proper nutrition, basic healthcare, and education.  Unfortunately, this conflict went largely unnoticed on the global stage, resulting in minimal international intervention and aid.  The war officailly concluded in 2006 after the LRA and the Ugandan government reached a peace agreement, but it was just the beginning of the recovery and reconciliation process for the north.

Due to the lack of international involvement in the conflict, much of the reconciliation process has been left in the hands of the Acholi people.  In contrast to how much of the world responds to war, these individuals have utilized a non-violent approach to bring about true justice: restoring dignity to both the victims and perpetrators.  Education has been one of the most influential platforms for this process.  The University of the Sacred Heart’s dedication to healing and promoting the health of the mind, heart, and body is clearly stated in the mission:

“To contribute to personal and social healing, growth and holistic development of Uganda and the world community through provision of quality education, training and research and community outreach.”

Our goal for this project is two-fold.  First, our group was asked to share the Acholi people’s story to the world.  We hope that this fundraiser will bring awareness not only to the atrocities that these people faced, but to how they overcame them: through acts of forgiveness and love.  Secondly, access to education is a vital component to a society that promotes the well-being of all individuals. Financially supporting the University of the Sacred Heart in Gulu will change the lives of the individuals in the community, creating a ripple effect that will stretch far and wide into the nation and the world.

The Blouin Global Scholars are hosting a concert featuring the band Foreign Figures on November 4, 2016 as a fundraiser for Sacred Heart.  The band is very excited to be able to come out for a night of great music for an even better cause.  We invite you to do the same!  For more details on the concert, visit the University of the Sacred Heart Fundraiser event page on Facebook!
