Ryley's Warriors

Welcome to Ryley’s story. If you just saw a blur of blonde hair flying past you trailed by shrieks of laughter being chased by a little man holding some sort of car and a toddling sweet baby girl, oh and a crazy 7 pound canine sidekick, you’ve joined a normal day at the Hampton’s house.  Monday, March 4th was one of these normal days including the normal winter colds going around. That morning Jenn took Ryley, with her brother (Charlie, 4) and sister (Everly, 2) in tow to their pediatrician's office. The normal winter illness had gone through the family and everyone was on the mend but Ryley. At the appointment, the doctor agreed with Jenn that something else seemed to be going on with her and sent them for blood work. After getting blood work and other errands done Jenn and the kids met Jimmy at home to eat pizza. After dinner Jenn got a call from the doctor that the blood tests would require further investigation and that the team at Sutter Children’s Hospital were awaiting their arrival that evening.

Jenn, Jimmy, and Ryley made the trip together from Vacaville to Sacramento and upon their arrival the medical team began their tests.  It was confirmed on Tuesday morning that Ryley had ALL Leukemia and during her lumbar puncture that day she received her Induction Day 0 treatment of chemo. On Wednesday, she received her first full round of chemo, only 48 hours after her visit to the doctors office and less than 24 hours after diagnosis. To say that it was crazy fast and a whirlwind doesn’t really fully capture the whiplash of the past three weeks the Hampton family has lived. The induction for her type of Leukemia is 30 days - 30 days in the hospital, away from Charlie and Everly, her own bed, home-cooked meals, school friends, and so many more things that define a 6 year old's world.

On Day 13 things got more complicated. Ryley began experience the effects of some sort of infection. She was moved to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit where it took her medical team several days to determine what was causing her symptoms and how best to treat the infection. After long days and nights the medical team agreed that it was a brain infection and planned a course of treatment. Once she was stabilized she was able to maintain her induction schedule, with only a one day delay. Day 16 was her next chemo treatment, and depending on how her body continues to fight the brain infection, she either has 1 or 2 chemo treatments remaining. April 4th will be Day 30 and it can’t come soon enough. Day 30 holds promises of answers - how successful the treatment was and a treatment plan for at least the next 6-12 months. Day 30 also holds promises for Ryley of sleeping in her own bed and running around with Charlie and Everly, promises of a break from sleeping on couches and recliners made of hard plastic for mom and dad, and promises of relief from the constant work of the day-to-day hospital life.

This Go Fund Me page is an opportunity for the Hampton’s community to tangibly help with those day to day things that walking through something like this brings. The extra gas money to drive back and forth from Vacaville to Sacramento, the extra babysitters for Charlie and Everly, the extra food costs of eating while at the hospital, the extra cost of hotel rooms, the unexpected medical bills, all of the unexpected financial burden that comes with fighting this type of battle. Helping to take these types of distractions off of Jenn and Jimmy’s plate will allow them to continue to focus on fighting for and supporting Ryley. The outpouring of love and support for the family is overwhelming and this is a practical way for the community to show them how much Ryley means to each of us.

We don’t know how huge this campaign will be, if it has any hint of Ryley’s love for others - it will be remarkable. In the spirit of Ryley’s generosity to jumpstart this campaign, we would like to send, once printed, the first 100 donors that donate $50 or more a shirt that will share Ryley’s love with others who see it. The Hampton’s friend community has donated the first 100 shirts. After this we will keep you posted on a shirt campaign to also support the cause in addition to this Go Fund Me campaign.
