Ryan's spinal injury #Gobeyondgiving

Donation protected

As a few of you know, Ryan was paralyzed from the waist down as a result of three unsuccessful spinal cord surgeries over the course of one weekend in June of this year.  He was transferred to 3 different hospitals/facilities over the next five months, severely limiting the progress in his physical therapy.  The neglectful care he received at two of these facilities resulted in more complications to his health, and caused him to undergo additional surgeries that should never have occurred had he been properly monitored and treated post-surgery.

He has had everything he loved to do taken from him - he can no longer play the drums, train for mixed martial arts, go fishing with his grandfather, cook his own meals, drive, or use the bathroom without assistance.

Ryan was finally transferred home last month, but his living conditions are still limited.  He can only access one room in his house, and his bathroom is not equipped with a shower/bath station - he cannot even get into his bathroom at the moment until the doorframe is expanded.  There are a lot of renovations that need to still be made to meet his needs.

The durable medical equipment provided by his insurance is less than adequate and does not meet his needs at all:

- the wheelchair he was sent home with does not have leg or hip rails and he is currently using a spare seat belt to wrap around his legs and hold them together to prevent them from falling off the side of the chair.

-The lift and swing used to transfer him from his bed to his wheelchair requires a manual pump that requires extreme strength to maneuver, limiting the time he can be mobile in a wheelchair to only when an aide or his brother are there to help lift him out of the bed. He has to return to the bed if no one will be there the remainder of the day to use the lift.

-He does not have any means of transportation as their current vehicle is not wheelchair accessible.  At the moment he can only get outside briefly in his neighborhood when his aide is with him.

It's taken almost six months for him to agree that his family needs some help and in typical Ryan fashion, did not want to ask anyone for assistance which his medical needs until it was absolutely necessary nor want anyone to know about his condition.  His insurance has helped, but there is much they won't cover, and this is where he needs help from whomever can give it.  Any donation would be appreciative, as well as information about how to assist in the transition into this incredibly unfortunate situation.
