RV for long-term living

$6,160 of $7,000 goal

After a 3 month medical leave, I returned to work to find that we couldn't reach a mutually acceptable agreement with the accommodations I needed. With my savings drained from leave and no new job lined up, my disabled partner and I are now homeless. We are living in a 6 person tent with our two dogs. We had already planned to live full-time in an RV, so we're looking at this as a push in the direction we want to go with our lives. While I usually work entirely from home, our current living arrangement does not allow for reliable internet or enough power to run a laptop, which limits my ability to work. The funds will be used to purchase a reliable RV (which are very cheap at this time of year), outfit it with a satellite dish and cell and wifi extenders. Any additional funds will go towards replacing tires and other repairs and or survival while I find new work.

We found and purchased a 1984 Fleetwood Southwind last night. So far, it seems most of the repairs will be cosmetic, but we'll have it checked out fully today or tomorrow. The family we bought it from are upgrading to a larger size diesel pusher. They installed two new batteries while we were there. They had it taken into the shop and did some repairs before selling it. His parents have used it for the last year to live in full-time. D is getting to know the RV while I'm handling the paperwork, insurance, etc.

We had been planning on spending last night and tonight in a hotel to get a real shower and a break from sleeping in the tent, but now we have our new home!

Once we price any additional repairs, we'll get a mobile booster and start setting up a tech closet. After doing some additional research on mobile working options, satellite is looking to be more work than it's worth for now, but the costs for a truly mobile internet will be about the same.

The new plan is a mobile router with automatic network switching and getting two additional data plans so that we can use the best network available.

We took a bit of a road trip yesterday to check out some RVs at a used dealership, but the place was super shady once we got up there. The pictures were not at all accurate and their RVs wouldn't start.

We enjoyed the drive and the time to talk and dream, meet some interesting people, and the dogs were very well behaved, plus he found some amazing lights for pretty cheap. After the disappointment of the day, they really lifted my mood. We needed some additional lighting and they're going to be beautiful additions to whatever motorhome we get.

Arya wanted me to share how excited she is and how loved she feels. We are overwhelmed and truly grateful with all the responses. We're starting to make calls and will be able to start looking at RVs next week once the money is transferred. I increased our goal $2k for a stretch goal to help offset some of the repairs we know will be needed (most likely we'll need new tires which run $1-$1.5k, or to replace an older generator) or a better satellite but the original (already met) goal is enough for us to get started and stable.

I'll share pictures of the RVs we look at.

I'm amazed by the support we've received. We started looking around today, since it's like kissing frogs and looking for princes, and found https://inlandempire.craigslist.org/rvs/d/for-sale-1991-fleetwood-pace/6309076079.html. While we don't have enough yet, the gentleman selling isn't in a rush and is getting a lot of low-ball offers. This RV is around the after we figured we would find, but in better shape. When we get closer to $4k, I can give him a call back to see if he still has it. Of course, we'll keep looking at other options, but it was emotionally refreshing to look and not feel like security is entirely out-of-reach.
