Take Me Outside!

Kaslo is a small community of less than 1000 people in the heart of the West Kootenays, with a K-12 school of about 200 students. Students in secondary school are able to take part in a class called Outdoor Adventures, which consists of hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, survival skills, trip planning and overnight camping trips. This year we hope to go on a variety of multi-day trips including a 5 day canoe trip on Kootenay Lake and a 10 day hike on Vancouver Island's West Coast Trail.

The Outdoor Adventures course focuses on outdoor education, environmental stewardship and sustainability while recreating in the places that we love. My goal is to give students the skills and tools they need to be safe outdoors and take care of their local environment. Students will leave this course with their Canoe Tripping Paddler Certificate from the Recreational Canoeing Association of BC, as well as their Avalanche Safety Training Level 1. Additionally, this course gives students the opportunity to learn from the land that they live on and pursue careers that are connected to the Kootenays.

Because of the nature of small towns, it can be tough to get youth engaged in meaningful, sustainable, healthy activities, which is why outdoor education is such an important part of this community. Students come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, so we find that the biggest barrier to getting our youth outside is funding. All of our funding comes from student led fundraisers around the community, and family donations. We have a long list of expenses that include but are not limited to transportation, gear rentals, food, accommodation, guiding fees, certification training fees, park fees, etc.

If we are lucky enough to raise funds for our trips we will be using them throughout the year to take student's canoeing, skiing, camping, get outdoor certifications (Wilderness First Aid, AST 1) and hiking. Our biggest expense will be our multi-day hiking trip on the West Coast Trail in June, 2019, which alone will cost upwards of $8,000.

I can't begin to describe to you how appreciative we would be of any donations! Every last penny goes to getting these youth outside and building capacity for the outdoors in our community. Thank you so much for taking the time to read through our campaign :)
