Running to Feed Kenyan Children

Sunrise of Africa School, near Nairobi, Kenya, is now educating more than 300 children, many on scholarship, starting with our youngest class of 3 and 4 year olds. Without our offering scholarships, many of the children would not be able to get a good education. The school has been and continues to be a blessing to many families.

We have a great reputation in Kitengela (30 kilometres outside Nairobi) and our Open Days are always well attended by parents who have heard great news about both the excellent education on offer and the wonderful culture of the school. Those who visit and volunteer at the school always comment on the joy and laughter of the children and their eagerness to learn.

Each year we raise money to continue to educate and feed the beautiful children at the school. On Sunday 26th November we have ten runners – students, teachers and friends running in the 5km/10km and half marathon of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon 2017 to raise money for our food budget for 2018.

Our food budget for the year is approximately $20,000 and we have a goal to raise half of this ($10,000) through this fundraiser. Some of the students’ parents are unable to give their children many meals at home due to financial reasons and thus we ensure all those who attend school receive porridge and a hot drink at 10.00 am and a nutritious lunch at 1.00 pm, and some who need it, are given food to take home. This is an important part of the health and wellbeing of our children, helping them with their ability to concentrate well in the classroom.

This run is an exciting event which we have participated in for three years and it creates great excitement at the school as we all prepare for it, and the children encourage all their friends who are running.
