Meet Tracy and her son Matthew.
After Matthew's father and Tracy's father both passed away, Tracy found herself pretty much on her own trying to take care of her son who has Cerebral Palsy. She needed to find a home that could meet her needs financially - which was already a struggle - and meet the needs of her son as well. She was able to accomplish the former but not the latter.
She currently resides in Totowa where someone started to build a ramp for Matthew but was unable to finish. The part that was complete was not sustainable for long term use and needed to be deconstructed and put back together properly.
In addition to the ramp outside, there are other interior modifications needed.
- The bathroom in the home is not handicap accessible so Matthew is unable to independently use it. His mother needs to lift him in and out of the bathtub which is causing her to experience health issues of her own - namely severe back pain.
- The sink was not designed for a wheelchair to fit underneath.
- The doorways in the home are barely able to accommodate Matthew's wheelchair. Currently, Tracy needs to help him maneuver into his room and if he outgrows this wheelchair he will not be able to enter his room at all.
Rebuilding Together North Jersey hopes to make all the modifications necessary for Tracy and Matthew to live the independent lives they deserve.
Ramp construction is already underway and we are looking to raise $5,000 for a new shower, sink, fixtures and sliding door compliant with the American Disability Act.
