Children's Lullabies to Mothers

Please donate today!

Imagine a child receiving a loving message from his or her mother through a song whose words say "I love you" over and over again. Now imagine that child and mother being separated for a long period of time. The child receives no touch, no hug, and no comforting from the mother when he or she is sick or sad. This mother is incarcerated at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center. The words of her song express her hopes and dreams for her child. She knows that she has made some mistakes in her life, but she wants to tell her child that her love for him or her is strong and constant. This message of love is profound and clear through her song. This gift of music is priceless.

Through this project, fifteen women from Hiland Mountain Correctional Center will be able to work with a musician to write their own personal message to their child, a lullaby. Your donation of $25 (or more) will help to support, The Hiland Mountain Correctional Center Lullaby Project.

The money will be used to pay for:
• One Carnegie Hall staff member training the Anchorage musicians
• Fifteen stipends for Anchorage musicians for their work on the project
• Studio time for recording and mastering the CDs. A separate CD for each of the participating inmates will be made. In gratitude for your donation to help make this possible, you will receive a compilation of all fifteen lullabies written for this project.
• Services of a graphic designer for the CD cover
• Disk Makers (which is a production house for duplicating cds)
• Staff to coordinate the project

Keys to Life, in partnership with Carnegie Hall Music Weil Institute will bring this unique opportunity to Anchorage. Fifteen Hiland Mountain incarcerated mothers will be paired with fifteen Anchorage musicians to develop a lullaby CD. Each mother and her musician partner will spend about ten hours working together to combine the mother's lyrics and melody into a beautiful, comforting lullaby for her child which will be recorded in a studio with the musicians' team. The mother will receive a CD and you will receive a compilation CD of all the songs for your donations to this project.

When the project is finished and all CDs are recorded, there will be a live concert so you can witness the results of this special project.

Suzanne Little and Shirley Mae Springer Staten are very grateful for the opportunity to do this work. Your donation will allow us to support and enrich the lives of a child and their incarcerated mother.
