Help us Save Lucy

Donation protected
The hardest moments in life is to watch someone who is kind and caring, get ill and not even be able to communicate what hurts them. All you see is an individual who is hurting and looks to you for help and you feel powerless because you can’t just fix it.

“Our Lucy is the greatest individual ever to enter our lives. She is more than a pet- she is t
he old soul of our household who cares and nurtures her entire human and nonhuman family. She is family.” That’s all I could get from her humans Debbie and Ghassan who are stricken with fear and despair, tears running down their faces.
Today, Lucy was admitted to the hospital struck by what seems to be a sudden and unexplained attack of Immune- Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. There weren’t any clear signs of trouble, I was at their home on NYE and she seemed fine sleeping on the couch. She had a check up and blood work done a couple of months ago. Now her immune system is producing antibodies which mistakenly attack her own red blood cells. She is currently at ACCESS Animal Hospital where she is receiving blood transfusion.
She will need at least 3-4 of those. We can’t turn our backs on her, the thought of failing to help her because of the cost is bringing Debbie to her knees. We ask our community and even strangers to help, not for us but for Lucy because she deserves a chance to live.

Lucy came into Debbie’s home in 2008 from Los Angeles shelter where she ended up as a stray. We don’t know her life before she came home with Debbie and Ghassan but it took time and great care to let her blossom into her own, where she felt safe and confident to start coming out of her shell and start showering her adoptive parents with such unconditional love and trust. She gave kisses and snuggles when they were down.  When Billy was rescued and brought home, Lucy showed him what family life means by accepting the new addition. Shortly after, Leah and Max were rescued from a backyard situation and Lucy became the protector for them. In 2016, 4 puppies were thrown away as trash in the shrubs of El Segundo. Three of them - Lily, Ben and Charlie-came to Debbie’s home where Lucy became the mama they needed and mentor they looked up to. Lucy didn’t fight for attention, didn’t bulk at the constant addition of new members. Her selfless and kind personality meant she makes sure everyone else is taken care of. To find her suddenly fighting to live is terrifying on both levels- the unknown until doctors determine what is causing her autoimmune disorder and financial – to be able to run the necessary life saving care and also tests on why this is happening.

Please, if you can, help save Lucy. Without you, she will not get  the chance to fight, the chance that she deserves. She has never done anything to hurt anyone, hasn’t done anyone wrong and we can’t even imagine having to let her die because we couldn’t afford to pay to help her. We will be forever grateful for help in saving Lucy.
