Roxanne Studies in Italy!

WHO AM I?
Hello all! My name is Roxanne Lim and I'm currently studying Journalism at St. John's University in Queens, NY. Aside from being an aspiring journalist, I am also an independent media artist who specializes in food/travel writing, photography, and music. Recently, St. John's University awarded me the opportunity to study abroad in Perugia, Italy, and I need your help!

WHERE AM I GOING AND WHY?
Perugia, Italy is approximately two hours north of Rome by car and it is one of the cultural mainstays of all things art. The city hosts multiple festivals and events such as the Eurochocolate Festival, Jazz Festival, and the International Journalism Festival. Its robust culture allows the city to foster in an expansive learning environment, and I believe experiencing this chapter in my journey will be the push I need the closer I get to graduating at the end of 2017.

I have always dreamed of studying abroad but have never had the finances to do so. I started working at an early age, but most of that money was immediately distributed to adult responsibilities and helping take care of my family.

Because of this, I was always afraid that my dreams of traveling and creating content out of those experiences would fall short because of my low-income background. But what some of you may not know is that I am at St. John's because I am conquering that fear, one day at a time. I previously attended another college out of this perception that a cheaper, public institution with an "easy" major would be the faster track to success. I was trying to be someone the world told me to be, not who I wanted to be.

However, my time at St. John's has led me to learn that success comes where the hardships are, and when you grow from those hardships. I had to leave my comfort zone in order to find what life really had in store for me and now I'm excited to say that the time has come to take advantage of the resources I've been blessed with in my community.

For two weeks at the end of May, I am expected to study abroad in Perugia, Italy (and a few special days in Rome!) for an embedded-course called Global Leadership in Hospitality Management aka the "Italian Hospitality Boot-Camp." This opportunity allows me to expand my knowledge in the hospitality world; something I've worked so closely with in the past few years, whether it be working in coffee, bartending, or helping build my family's dessert business from the ground up. I am constantly exploring, finding new and revolutionary places that push the limits of traditional hospitality practices and no matter how much work goes on behind-the-scenes, I love every moment of it.

HOW FAR DOES A DOLLAR GO?
As for the breakdown of expenses, I estimate that this trip will cost approximately $3000 to comfortably travel and study. Here's what the breakdown will look like:

- $1700 will go to tuition expenses.

- $900 will go toward the flights to and from Rome (as of November, flights are $430 each way, but subject to change).

- $400 will be split between emergency and local fare overseas.

I kindly appreciate any types of donations you offer! I will accept donations up until JANUARY 9TH, 2017 which is 1 WEEK before my spring semester (the semester I will be taking the required course for this trip to Italy) begins.

This chance to study abroad is a golden opportunity to me, and if you know me well enough, I would never ask for something I could not find a way to return in the future. During my experiences in college, I've always wanted to find an opportunity to study in another country before I graduated. By doing so, I will be able to further develop the skills I've gained both working in hospitality and through my previous leadership positions. I love any chance to combine my various passions and I firmly believe this trip to Italy is the next step to make a career out of it.

Thanks again for taking the time to listen to my story and support my cause!
