Roots and Wings is a nature- and culture-based school in West Haven, VT. We believe children learn through observation, experimentation and exploration. They benefit not only from formal lessons, group discussion, and engaging activities, but also from playing with their peers. We believe that when children are free to explore they develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world around them. By offering students a safe place to investigate and reflect, they can make personal connections to the curriculum.
Our multi-age classrooms benefit learners at each stage of their growth. We create the conditions under which each student will flourish as individuals that will complement the whole of their community. Children spend time outside of the school challenging themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally, and we take the time to nourish our spirits as well as our minds.
Our school has grown and will be adding a middle school in the fall of 2018! Now we need more space. We are asking for your help in raising funds for materials to build a classroom--an enclosed outdoor classroom with multi-purpose capabilities. With any remaining funds we hope to purchase a 15-passenger van so that we can further our students’ education off site. A main focus for our middle school will be service learning inspired by the students' passions, and we need reliable transportation to get out into our community, work on projects, and explore and learn more about the beautiful state of Vermont. We are also in need of furniture for the classroom as well as books and other materials.
We have a talented crew of parents and friends with construction skills and we are acquiring as much re-purposed material as possible, but we need to purchase things like a corrugated metal roof, sheet rock, nails, electrical parts, insulation, and a pellet stove. We plan to construct the building over three or four weekends during the summer of 2018, beginning at the end of June.
Whatever you can give would be so helpful and greatly appreciated! Although we are a private school, our families are drawn to our school because of our philosophy and often have to stretch their funds or barter to make the tuition payments. But our school community is growing and we need a classroom for our older kids! We have big dreams of serving our community and our world and we are teaching our students how to make their dreams a reality.
