Roosevelt High School Band Play-a-thon 2019

Tax deductible
The Roosevelt High School Band Program has been in existence since 2008.  The program was started from nothing, and now serves students in grades 9-12 with 150+ students enrolled.  The academic 18/19 budget for the entire music program at Roosevelt High School is $150.00, a mere $1.66 per student. Our newly created band booster organization realized that the next generation of musicians not only need, but deserve more.

Jazz and Symphonic Festivals are very important to the growth and aptitude of a band program.   Our Jazz band has had a lot of success in the last 3 years as they have earned 10 1st and 2nd place trophies at festivals throughout the state of Oregon.   Their success has been a big boost to school and community pride.   We would like to extend our involvement in more symphonic, jazz, and percussion festivals.   These opportunities expose students to other great ensembles and allows them to attend impactful workshops and clinics.

In addition to funding for festivals, there are other costs that are involved in keeping a music program running such as sheet music, instrument purchases and repairs, supplemental instruction, transportation, etc.  Below you will see a breakdown of what some of the program costs are.

Festival Entrance Fees - $2500
Transportation Costs - $3500
Special Event Gear Transport - $500
Sheet Music - $1500
Misc. Repairs not covered by the school district - $1500
Professional Instructors/ Summer Camp Offerings - $9000
Food for students - $3000
Misc. Supplies - $1000
New Marching Uniforms $200-300 per uniform
Instruments not provided by the district - the 'wish' list - $5000

We’ve spoken a lot about the tangible, but there is something even greater that high school music programs provide.  Students who might not otherwise be able to pay for private instruction benefit from music instruction in school programs.   According to the National Association for Music Education, schools that have music programs have an attendance rate of 93.3% compared to 84.9% in schools without music programs. (February 24, 2015)   In addition, students in instrumental programs score higher on standardized tests, in English as well as Mathematics.   (Journal for Research in Music Education, June 2007).   As generally described by various students in the program, “my music class is the reason I come to school every day”.

So we ask you for your help, $50 or $5, it will all go to a great cause, keeping music alive in our schools.
